Hot radiators, no hot water

    Hello all!

Yesterday I turned on the gas boiler for the first time. The radiators worked, but I have no hot water in the kitchen or bathrooms.

A bit of background info: I just moved into a ground floor apt, and during the final inspection there was no water in the bathrooms. A plumber was called to change the pump, which had been leaking. I had the boiler serviced when I moved in, and the plumber said that the leaky bath tap was causing the pump to run frequently, and would eventually damage it. I couldn't find replacement cartridges and so I changed the entire bath tap. Now pump works only when I run water. I am mentioning this in case it's related.

Yesterday I turned on the boiler as I wanted hot water. The radiators work (except in the bathroom, but that's a problem for another day). I think my boiler is a Potterton 12 and I have a Centaurplus 11 unit to set the times. I have a thermostat in the hallway to control the temperature. I assumed I would have to turn the boiler on in order to get hot water and I assumed that in the summer I would simply turn off the rads and the thermostat but still turn on the boiler for hot water. I think I have an immersion as well (there is a switch outside of the press), but I was told it's generally used as a backup in case the boiler doesn't work. I didn't have the heat on very long, but long enough that all rads were very warm, but none of the pipes in the press were hot. One was maybe lukewarm.

Is the boiler only for heat and not hot water? Should all 4 red knobs in the press be fully opened? I think the bottom one (that leads to the bottom half, which I think is for the hot water) is not fully open. I didn't try turning on the switch for what I think is the immersion (never had one before).

Any advice would be much apprectiated.
