Hi, I'm interested in buying a few acres of land. When I asked the auctioneer if there were any agricultural financial entitlements being sold with the land. he emailed me and said 'there were no entitlements associated with this property' Would anyone know if there is a register that I can check to see if there were even entitlements drawn on this land? I have the folio number. Is that information confidential or can it be found in the public domain? Thanks for any help

What difference would it make if there were entitlements previously drawn on the land. Entitlements are not linked to a specific acre as such.

My understanding is to be able to drawn grants, I have to buy the entitlements with the land. I called to the dept of Agriculture and this is what the official told me. Some farmers can keep the entitlements (so I believe). I'm looking for some clarification on this, if anyone has any.

No, you can buy or lease entitlements no link to a particular parcel of land, whoever told you otherwise is wrong.

I have more entitlements than land at the moment so I lease the surplus. There are specialist auctioneers who deal with selling or leasing of the entitlements. I have used http://hmgentitlements.ie/ but there are plenty of others around too.

Thanks for the reply. I'm used to the old system of headage grants (if you remember them). My understanding was that I apply for whatever grants are available on the relevant ground. When I spoke to the ag officer, I understood that he meant, that some farmers when selling land, hold on to the 'entitlements'. So if I want to draw grants on a parcel of ground, I go and rent or buy the entitlements. I'm hoping to buy a few acres for my retirement, so I am figuring out the system and the way it works. Thanks for your help.

If looking at buying entitlements, be careful as higher value entitlements will decrease in value over the next few years and lower value will increase until they are all essentially equal (so buy low not high). They may well disappear altogether in the future also, it looks like the future of payments will be more activity/environmental based.
