Trade in - Fathers car

My elderly father has a car he can't drive anymore and I need to get rid of it. At the same time, I'm looking to buy a car from a dealer and thought I might as well use his car as a trade-in.

Will I have to switch the log book to my name first before I trade it in, or will they accept it in his name?

Most garages won’t care and would rather one less owner on the car.

My brother did this a few years ago and it was no problem. He actually traded two cars together, his own and his father’s. Both cars were old but well cared for and in great condition. No need to change name. Amount was small enough to qualify for small gift so no tax implications either for him to not repay his father as agreed between them.

You were both right - not an issue at all.

    Many thanks
