Ford Focus 2015 Check Engine Light

    Well lads,

Was on the way to work this morning and the car started to lose power. Still driving but a noticeable difference in power. The Check Engine light came on then after and has been on ever since. Turned it on after work and the car was back to normal again, but still had light on.

Mate of mine mentioned DPF, anyone have any ideas or experience anything like that with a Focus before. It's a 1.5 TDCi Zetec model.

    Cheers...

A check engine light is a generic message so it could be any number of things. The car would need to be scanned by a garage with diagnostic equipment to see if any fault codes were logged on the car's ECU to point to the potential problem.

Could be anything. If you do mostly short trips then it's probably a clogged DPF that hasn't had a long enough trip to run a regen. Bring it to a garage for a check. DPF can be cleaned which is a lot cheaper than replacement. Otherwise it could be a stuck EGR. Garage should be able to identify it.

Edit - Could also try cleaning the MAF sensor with contact cleaner. You can get some in Halfords for about 6 euro. It's just past the air filter. Takes about 5-10mins to remove it, spray liberally with contact cleaner, dry for 30 mins or so. Did the same on my 2015 focus (1.6tdci) and the amount of dirt that came off it was surprising, helped with immediate readings on fuel economy.

See if there's any obvious cracks or disconnection of hoses around the air filter, other than that best to have the fault read.

Thanks everyone. Engine light disappeared just after I posted this and car has been driving perfectly ever since, which I found strange.

mentioned it to garage this morning and they told me not to worry - only if light comes back on again.

    quite a strange one!

Did the garage not hook up an OBD scanner to the car?

Faults are logged after the light clears, or they were on my focus when I had a traction sensor problem.

It wouldn't do any harm to identify what caused it in my opinion. My engine management light appeared out of the blue and did a similar thing to yours. My fault returned a month or two on and soon after the ECU packed in.

I had the ECU replaced by a Ford garage in the UK and the same low power/ engine light problem recurred a few months on. It turned out to be an ignition coil feeding one of the plugs which was a known problem and led to the blown ECU.

It was a few years back and I got the coil or maybe all four from Ebay and had no more trouble. I had by this time bought my own OBD sensor and have it over here with me now. I used that to diagnose the traction problem.
