2023 Deer season

How has the opening days of the season been for everyone?

I made it out to a north Cork farm in the opening week. There are Fallow deer that have shown up in a new forestry there in recent years.

I got out for two hours one evening and watched a doe and fawn mooching around for about half an hour but no sign of any bucks.

Went back the following morning and bumped a group of 10 does and fawns in an adjacent field. A lot of the fawns are this year's brood as opposed to yearlings so daddy has to be knocking about somewhere.

Do people find that bucks tend to keep to themselves until rutting time instead of herding up with the does?

I've only managed to out get one evening (North East Cork) on a new permission since the season commenced. I know there are (were) plenty of fallow in the area during the off season as I saw lots of them. Did not so much as glimpse any while I was out. My compensation was that the landowner spoke to a couple of his neighbours and they are keen to have me stalk on their properties adjacent to my permission. Also, it was a particularly beautiful sunset, so still enjoyed the outing. Best of luck in your endeavours!
