Just watching the news there about the ploughing going cashless. That's not very fair on some of the old boys. You can come on the day with cash but you mightn't get in due to capacity.

Do the days usually be sold out? Just wondering if this will be an issue with the older generation?

Should be banned, along with the whole agri sector. what little carbon footprint we're allowed is needed for the data centres, I can go without meat and dairy but now without twitter, insta and tiktok.

Quick answer, yes it'll put older people off going.

Gone too dear now anyway at €30.

It's just confirming the end of days of the ploughing as an event to visit for rural and the originators farming community.

Again I’ll point out, not all businesses accept card but yet it’s the ones that won’t accept cash that’s the problem.

The whole ’its unfair on older people’ is extremely patronizing and belittling to older people too. Many of them know how tapping works.

Given the size the event has become its safer for the organisers and the emergency services to know how many people are coming by making them book in advance and limiting ticket sales to site capacity. It makes sense. The assumption that once you turn 60 you become an idiot is patronising.

This is all about them saying "We'll very happily sell you a ticket for cash at the gate if we have them, but don't be surprised if it's all booked out in advance, because we have capacity limits we need to enforce, and buying online has become very, very popular. So if you want to be sure of getting a ticket before you travel, buy one online".

Nothing unreasonable about it at all, it's just stating obvious facts.

Not a hope.

The ploughing match was going on when it was only a few lads in a field.

Hardly anyone knew they were there except family and connections.

Even if the huge event it has become gets less popular the ploughing will continue.

If they get in free. Which hopefully they do. Should be paid to attend really.

In the commercial side these past few years have seen less of the machinery and automotive stands. They're finding they're not loosing anything by not attending.

If that trend continues and it's sqeezed the other end on public attendance. Then it becomes less of a thing that it has/had become in the rural Irish calendar.

To me the Ploughing going cashless is for two reasons.

Mainly they want people to book their ticket in advance and if it's lashing rain/etc on the day you've it paid.

Then there's the cash handing bit.

The numbers for the ploughing have been rising over the last few years. They've gotten strict about people walking in without paying and people giving you their ticket on the way out. The schools have also pushed up the attendance.

It didn't surprise me they reversed the cashless thing in the end.

I might or mightn't go this year. (Depends on the weather mainly) Apparently last year a nice few of the stalls were missing. Hoping it doesn't continue.

Going cashless also means your attendees are traceable by transactions and it can be anathema to antisocial dregs types.

I know a couple in their seventies who had to change when Ulster Bank exited.

The woman in AIB explained everything thing to them and they are tapping away to beat the band.

They like being able to check the account balance on their phones.

They have been booking online for years.

The point is that with a little help a lot of older people can make the change.

The couple I'm referring to used to draw out fairly large sums of cash. Now they are using the cards instead.

They are saving the trips to the bank and are safer not having too much cash in the house.

Don't forget cards have been quite common for over 30 years so today's 75 year old was 45 at that time.

Well the sector feeds you and adds to the Irish economy and society overall.

There wouldn't be too many in the sector scrounging for HAP for example.

6 out of ten older people do not own a smart phone or use the internet according to Celine Clarke of age action so it's a rear issue. Yes many tap but many do not. Now I imagine that many have CC but it the having to buy online may be the issue.
