I'm currently with Vodafone and have been for many years, paying €35 a month but out of contract soon and rising to €40 a month. I see Sky have a 12 Month offer for €30 or €35 a month for 24 months. I've never had an issue with Vodafone and would only be changing for the cheaper price, what's peoples experience of Sky? Is everything straight forward like Vodafone?

I have had SKy fibre broadband since January and so far have had no issues with it

The only bad thing I hear about sky is that they force you to use a sh1t router. Any truth?

Couldn't tell you as I don't think I ever used it - I have a Unifi setup at home with a USG (Security Gateway) acting as the router and I just connected it straight away to Sky after install

I had Sky for 2 years. Overall very good.

Best stability in terms of connection. Other providers, it has varied.

Billing - perfect. They ask you to pay by DD 1 month in advance. I literally had no issues with that.

Year 2, after I got an offer to stay on, I got billed about 100 quid for some random nonsense, they blamed something to do with the previous provider, who vehemently rejected that. I asked them WTF and never got a straight answer. I went the complaint route, got a refund. What is that.

I would go with them again. They also don't do the tiny font 6 excuse of they will raise the price every 12 months by inflation + percentage. None of that.

Can anyone with the current 30€ fiber offer(500Mb) can answer this questions:

    • what router/modem do they offer?
    • how is the wifi coverage?
    • do they provide a IPV4/6 IP that I can open ports to connect to my network from internet(VPN, IP cameras, NAS, etc)
    • on their provided router can you configure your own gateway, local network IP range, guest wifi?
    • can you use your own router with the SIRO infrastructure, are the settings easily available?

I just closed my existing virgin media contract and looking to move to sky.(cheapest out there)

I changed from pure Siro to sky. Kept using fritzbox, didn't even notice the changeover.

Is there any extra fees for a new fiber(SIRO) connection with sky?

Like modem fee, activation fees or install fee?

Just signed up from Eir (35€pm up to 100mb) to sky (30€pm up to 500mb).

Eir put me on new contract last week and since then seem to have throttled my speed.

Normally 80mb+ down to 40mb+ since i am in the contract cooling off period expires 25th Sept.

    Getting sky install done tomorrow.

drilling ,new box etc. essentially i understand new connection box in hall and Fibre Optic cable replaces phone cable(copper - limited capacity)

    bye bye Eir.

looking for Siro and these guys seem to have the best deal atm.

i will report back by the weekend.

I'm thinking about leaving virgin, long term customer but they won't give me anything better than €60 pm. This €30pm deal looks too good to be true. My question/Concern is, is it suitable for a high usage family of 5?

500mb is far more than enough. I'm with sky since Feb and it's been spot on. Was with Pure Telecom beforehand and no issues either. Will probably keep switching between both every year to get the best deals.

I'm probably going to do the same thing. It seems to be the best way to get a better deal.

I have moved to Sky fiber for 30 a month.

To answer some of the questions I had:

    • Activation and installation fees: If you sign up online there are no extra fees. Just 30 euro a month payed upfront.what router/modem do they offer?
    • how is the wifi coverage? Sky hub seems to have a better wifi coverage that virgin media hub 3.0.

    • do they provide a IPV4/6 IP that I can open ports to connect to my network from internet(VPN, IP cameras, NAS, etc). Yes both IPV4/6 is available and ports can be opened. It's not really easy file other routers where you have Port forwarding menu, but it works really well.

    • on their provided router can you configure your own gateway, local network IP range, guest wifi? You can chose private network IP class, but cannot configure your own DNS ip. No guest wifi .

    • can you use your own router with the SIRO infrastructure, are the settings easily available? Haven't looked into this part yet, but I think this is possible if PPOE username and password are known. Also a router where VLan can be configured is required.

Other problems that are a concern for me with Sky Hub:

it has a few ports opened by default:

    nmap 192.168.0.1

    Starting Nmap 7.80 ( https://nmap.org ) at 2023-10-09 12:17 IST

    Nmap scan report for 192.168.0.1

    Host is up (0.0014s latency).

    Not shown: 997 closed ports

    PORT     STATE SERVICE

    53/tcp   open domain

    80/tcp   open http

    31337/tcp open Elite

Does nmap scan the internal interfaces of the router or does it do the External (ie Internet facing) one too? (I haven't used it personally)

If its internal only then these ports would be open by default anyway. And you'd need to find a port scanner online such as grc.com or similar to double-check if these ports are open to the internet too

For example, port 80 would need to be open on the internal network to allow access to the Router's admin UI. Port 53 is the DNS service.

Apparently the 31337 port is used by Sky for remote maintenance (assume customer support and pushing updates to the router)

    added the wrong network output.

    Starting Nmap 7.80 ( https://nmap.org ) at 2023-10-09 15:47 IST

Nmap scan report for sky-78-18-40-106.bas512.cwt.btireland.net (78.18.40.106)

    Host is up (0.0014s latency).

    Not shown: 997 closed ports

    PORT     STATE SERVICE

    53/tcp   open domain

    80/tcp   open http

    31337/tcp open Elite

This should be the output of nmap for external IP. Although the scan was done from a laptop within the network.

Will do a test from an outside network.

All ports are closed(except the ones forwarded by intention) when scanning from outside the network.

All good, a bit worried about those ports.

Use https://canyouseeme.org/ to see if those ports are actually accessible over the internet.

Scanned with different tools from outside my network. All is good.

    Ports are closed.
