Oil burner puffing

Sounds ridiculous but it's the only way I can describe our oil burner trying to fire now after oil running out this evening, adding a few gallons of kerosene to the tank till the delivery comes and after bleeding the burner. Burner keeps going now without locking out but not firing up properly and i've ended up with a puffing burner

Any ideas what might be causing this?

Possibly dirt or water from the bottom of the tank. There may also some air in the line.

    probably not enough oil

usually you need a good steady flow of oil
