Would anybody be able to advise rough accountant's charge to amend tax return please?

Depends what needs to be amended and who initially submitted it, very hard to say otherwise

If it's just to add a tax credit or claim medical expenses that need to be claimed where the accountant initially submitted the return, it should be a small cost

If it's to make some serious changes to trading income that potentially involves looking at the overall accounts that you or somebody else submitted then you're basically looking at a charge in line with a normal return

Thanks, I do my own income tax return every year. It was just an amendment for nursing home fees. They logged into my account on Revenue and amended it by putting in the figure. Was in and 9ut in 15 minutes total and I feel their charges are 9n the high side.

If you do your own income tax return, like a Form 12 or Form 11, why are accountants involved?

You're not just paying for the 15 mins it takes to amend the return, you're paying for the knowledge they have and previous research done in relation to claiming nursing home fees, what is allowed etc.

I'm guessing you weren't sure what you could claim and that's why you contacted them for assistance?

I get that so just would like to know what a ballpark fee would be please?

At the very minimum €100 ex VAT, but depending on the office could easily be €200

If you already knew what you had to do and don't use an accountant anyway, I'm not sure what the purpose of the question is. All you were doing was inputting the figure for nursing home fees you paid but had forgotten to enter when you filed your original return.

think I understand what you are saying despite the typos.

    How much did they charge?

I wasn't sure and went for advice. I feel their charge is excessive for less than 15 minutes work.

    circa 150e ex VAT.

You might have been in and out in less than 15 minutes but they probably spent time on corresponding with the Revenue after you left, and whatever time was spent on whatever else they thought was necessary.

No they logged into my own account on Revenue and one follow up phone call to see if I got the refund.

You also have to add the time for setting up their anti money laundering (client identity) file, raising the invoice and accounting back off time.

I'd suggest that they charged €150/€200+VAT, and THEY feel that it wasn't worth their time.

And that's assuming that they have the amount, and it was obvious to them what needed to be done. It doesn't include checking anything unusual or trying to gather info / calculate amounts. If that was involved, it would have been more.

    What what did they charge?

No checking, totted up 2 figures and entered it on the amendment. They filed an IT38 last year for me so had all my details.

Pretty much all accountants charge by time.

A sole practitioner operating out of one room in a small town might charge €60 per hour. A partner in a large firm might charge €1,000 per hour. So, your question is almost impossible to answer.

It's not unknown for a bill to include a premium to account for the irritation caused by some clients, or as a way of trying to persuade that client to move elsewhere.

I believe all accountants will offer a quotation before doing work, if asked. Clearly you didn't ask - why not?

Are you going to tell us how much you were charged?
