    A 2l TDCI mondeo engine.

Had a leaking injector. The injector seals were changed 2 weeks ago by a mechanic. After the work was done, there was still visible exhaust gases coming from the injectors. Cabin filling with fumes. Brought back. Mechanic says it is the spilit oil burning off. Car breaks down. New mechanic takes out the injectors and finds what you see in the photos. New versus old. Also large black carbon build up that had to be scraped off.

So, as per photos, does it look like, considering what new mechanic found, that the injector seals were really changed, or are there two seals on a mondeo diesel injector and we are talking different things.

    Thanks all.

There isn't a hope in hell those 2 seals were changed, look how wide the centre hole on the copper washer has gotten, that takes years for them to get that bad, old mechanic either didn't change all 4, or didn't clean the injector seat properly, or at all, when installing the new seals.

For the injectors there is an oil seal, which is a big rubber grommet type thing that sits around the main body of the injector to prevent engine oil going into injector hole.

Then there is the copper washer injector seal, which seals the injector nozzle into the combustion chamber and also stops combustion gases from blowing up out into the engine bay. Leading to fumes.

I'd imagine it's the copper seals (ones in your photos) that the mechanic is talking about, and there's only 1 per injector.
