hi, i am moving home from the UK at the weekend and will be taking my car to customs once off the boat to get plates etc. What is the process with Insurance, am i ok on my UK insurance when i leave until I get the plates to allow me insure in Ireland. I arrive in the middle of the night so wouldn't have the chance to insure as i assume the car needs to be on Irish plates first

As it is your own car will you be looking for exemption from the VRT on basis of ownership length - if so, you need to fill in a form for Customs and submit online, when you get their agreement then you make an appointment at one of the relevant NCT centres and obtain plates. If you are paying the VRT etc then I am pretty sure there are still forms and an appointment with a VRT Centre involved.

So long as your car stays on it's uk plates then your insurance will cover you in Ireland for a few weeks until it is re-registered, just let them know and move the process along as quickly as possible within the constraints of the system.

Yes i will be looking for VRT exemption and have filled out the forms, by the sounds of it i will just go in off the ferry and dot to I's and then apply via the NCT centre so nothing to worry about that morning off the boat, thank you
