Home/workplace chargers with 2 sockets

Is such a thing available? In work we are about to add a PHEV to 2 x full EVs that will need charging, our single charger is going to be under pressure with the PHEV! But future proofing also to a certain extent.

So, is there a charger available that has 2 sockets for 2 cars to charge at the same time? We have 3 phase power and the EVs charge at 11kw now, I assume this speed will be shared among both vehicles making it slower if 2 were plugged in together? But thats OK I suppose.

Will be a commercial unit like in Lidl/Tesco

Talk to the installers that do commercial installs such as Nigel Daly (https://evchargingstations.ie/) You could add a 2nd charger but a 2 port charger should look cleaner.

We have a single charger already, 2 of us in full EVs which is working well, I think 2 port chargers are the way forward

They can output 22kw on 3 phase, was talking to someone since first posting so 2 cars could draw 11kw at the same time, assuming the car itself can draw that. Which is all either of us get at the moment anyway from a Cupra Born and an Audi Etron, the 3rd car will be an X5 PHEV, Im not sure what max speed that can draw just yet.

Pretty sure the X5 will be just 3kW

Just be careful about what your current grid connection is and whether it can handle the extra load

Depending on the situation with the parking spaces, wall mounted single chargers might look neater but it's really up to you

IIRC the 2023 X5 is 3.6 and the 2024 will be 7.2 on certain models so I will wait till 2024

Thats the kind of thing I was looking for alright, our single charger here is a Garo so I would be happy to stick with them

Correct. You've answered your own question. Dual-port 22kW charge points are common/normal. Its really down to whether your site has 22kW to spare, so your electrician will have to make a recommendation on that.

Its also worth noting that while your house has 3 phase (as does mine) there might not be the supply in the area to give you all you want due to the number of other people charging etc. Really depends on your local grid

This is what we have at work, 3 twin port chargers managed by Epower.

Even though we have 3 phase onsite these are single phase for some reason.

For anyone who was involved with getting charging units installed on a commercial property, what was the cost per unit.

I have been pricing them recently and the quotes are very high, over 25k ex VAT for 2 twin units. There are some groundworks involved but only minor in my view.

Get more quotes is all I can say to that quote!

The units themselves, unless you are getting something fancy, is <€2k and then a few €k for the ground work etc. I had multiple quotes for one 22kW pedestal twin port unit ranging from about €7k-€13k... cant remember exactly, but in that ballpark.

The lower priced job was picked and it was from one of the best known commercial installers in the country and there have been zero issues. They had to dig a 10-15m trench for that also.

€25k for two units is madness. There should be some savings with the install of the second unit since they will already be onsite so €25k is ridiculous unless the ground work is awkward in some way, which you say it isn't so there doesn't appear to be any reasonable excuse for that price other than gouging.

I thought the same on the cost of the quote. But personally I would only be familiar with the domestic pricing.

Could you PM me the installer you used. I am still waiting on a few others to send in their quotes.

Our existing one (Garo single plug unit) was more or less the same price as a domestic unit, albeit grant not available for commercial. It was under 2 grand installed anyway. Its fitted on a wall with the fuse box very close by inside so it was an easy installation relatively speaking

€25K! Back in the day a place I worked in just got a few of the cheap Rolec pods and the in-house sparks installed them, they probabaly could have put in 50 of them for €25K!

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Single phase, wall mounted units next to a fuse board should be cheap and easy to install for sure.

Costs increase quite a bit when you move to pedestals and underground cable runs that require a plinth and trenches, concrete etc.

So, it is very much a depends type thing but €25k for two is crazy money.

For PHEVs why not just install a few outdoor sockets?

No need for 3 phase chargers. Just add a few single phase for 7.4kw charging.

Note many companies require billing, apps, credit card readers, warranty, support etc, that's not to say some people are quoting crazy. Wall mounting can help and locating them in the cheapest parking space cost wise. Also 7kW max is typically ok for commercial not 22kW as is often specified which drives up costs. Marking of spaces in terms of paint and signage may be part of the job and paint is typically a separate specialist.

Some suppliers may take part of the charging fee too, particularly in apartment type systems.
