Changed my car a couple of weeks ago. Bought from a dealer. Tax is up at end of July. How long does it normally takes to receive VRC so that I can tax it? Thanks.

Should take about 1 week. 10 days max.

Ring Shannon and they can tell you when the last change of ownership was done.

It should correspond to when you bought the car.

Or just check the motortax website. No need to call

I checked the website and it says most recent certificate issues on 29th which is in line with when I bought it. I guess it just hasn't arrived yet. I might give them a call anyway.

Took 10 working days for me before Christmas. Once the new cert is issued can you just do a PIN retrieval on the website to get in to tax it? i.e. you don’t have to wait for the cert to be delivered

Yeah, I tried to use the website to tax it but it doesn't seem to have changed over to me yet. It doesn't recognize my address or name yet as the owner. Tried calling them this afternoon but they only take calls from 9 till 1.30 (or maybe even 1) according to the voicemail.

You have a month’s grace, so to speak. You won’t incur any arrears until you get into September if the tax expires on 31st July. Guards couldn’t care less about a car out of tax by a month.

There’s 2 weeks left in July, so I’d say you’ll be grand.

I got through to them in Shannon today and they never received the change of owner document from the dealer. Not the dealers fault as the online system sometimes goes down but the dealer doesn't know because they don't get notified. They think they've done it properly. This is what the office in Shannon told me when I eventually got through. Contacted the dealer today and they are resubmitting it.

Not a great system if it goes down sometimes and nobody knows that the transaction hasn't gone through.
