I didn’t get to watch any games today. Monday mornings are all go in my household

If the mens team lost 10 games in a row their fans would still sing "you'll never beat the Irish" and not a word about it.

Yeah I was at the Euro's final and it really felt like it took the wind out of Germany and their fans once the news that she was injured started to filter through

The crazy 11 year old dragged me out of bed before 7am to watch the Italy v Argentina match (I may not have seen much of it due to falling back asleep again), and we caught the first 15 minutes of the Germany match before we had to head out and do the summer-camp run. Looking forward to sitting down to watch the highlights with a cup of tea later.

Also - is there an inordinate amount of penalties?? It seems like this tournament is particularly high on the penalty count. (11yo is a goal keeper, so there is much rewinding and replaying to discuss either the score or the save and whether she reckons she would have stopped it 😁)

I watched itv coverage of France v Jamaica yesterday and I’m sure they mentioned it had been the first game without a penalty. Does that sound right?

Honestly it’s a bit sad that you keep piping up in this thread to denigrate the women’s football, comparing it unfavourably to men’s football and declaring definitively that none of your friends and family are interested. Are you like this with every minority sport fück all are interested in they show on television?

I’d understand if you were targeting the (men’s) Six Nations when interest in that is artificially inflated by the SoCoDu boy’s club in RTE every single year but the Women’s World Cup is only on for a few weeks once every four years.

Women’s football is growing in popularity exponentially year on year. It is simply exploding in popularity, not compared to men’s football but to itself. People are watching, more people than your mates down the pub. You need to get over yourself and your dinosaur biases.

Again the ones who are mostly comparing it to the mens game are women. Like i've said they cant have it both ways, Can't keep saying it's just as good as the mens game etc yet get the hump when everyone doesn't just agree with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭TheProudHighway

Who are these people? I haven’t seen them on here. You are making this up in your head in order to be outraged. If it bothers you so much just stop reading this thread. It’s of no consequence to you.

    Philippines still beating New Zealand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,754 ✭✭✭cms88

Really? You've seen no one try and claim womens game is on par with the mens game? I'm not outraged at all. Just pointing out my option. Not my fault you're upset by that.

It clearly bothers you seeing as you're getting so upset by people having a different view to you.

Do you also get angry when you see a woman working? Or voting? Or being away from the kitchen for any other reason?

To be fair you kind of do, I coach girls teams and chat to a lot of people about the competition day to day.

Absolutely nobody has ever said its on a par with the men's.

That it's improving, that it's getting more popular and that it's fantastic to see the rise in participation is what people talk about this comparison to the men's game is in your head.

Took often girls are watching cartoons etc where there is only token female characters or just love interests. It's fantastic to see women's sport getting on the TV be it soccer camogie or whatever else.

I'm amazed it took John Kenny 88 minutes to make a comment like that.

I must say fair play to Morocco. They might have veen beaten by Germany by four goals but at least they got two goals as well so well done Morocco. I see Korea going home. Korea bottom of the group.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Canada are Olympic champions. Will be tough to beat them but I am confident.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Group H is wrong. Someone made a mistake there. Korea should be at the bottom of that table with Morroco in third place.

Korea lost by 2 goals and Morocco lost by 6. That puts Morocco on the bottom. Am I missing something?

This thread is both sad and hilarious.

Ive been really enjoying the games Ive seen and really looking forward to the game today.

Some of the funny comments Ive seen:

"Goalkeeping is very poor". I'm sorry, but Katie Brosnan is an excellent goalie. The only goal she has let past her was from a penalty.

"The game is very slow". Erm, did you watch the IREvAUS game? The last 30 minutes was edge of your seat stuff. There were, 7? 8? corners in the last 30 minutes. You call that slow? Also, I've seen many Irish mens games that were slow.

This thread would be a good source if anyone wants to update their ignore list.

It's a football tournament are people not entitled to criticism the standard of play if they wish?

That is what people do when it's a men's tournament so why should it be any different for the women.

Patronizing nonsense like your post above where criticism of the games or player is not allowed because they are women is exactly the sort of thing that turns people off women's sports, why engage with women's sport when a lot of people seem to only want positive opinions to be allowed to expressed about women's sport.

Alba Redondo scored 2 goals for Spain today. Great name and based on her name I'd say she must be an incredible player.

Think they are up against it today. Can they summon the spirit of Jack and eek out a draw to stay in with a chance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,728 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

Criticism of a Men's tournament is usually more directed at individuals/teams - that Ronaldo is a wimp, ha ha Harry Maguire, bloody Spanish and their diving, Argentina timewasting etc.

Whereas some of the criticism of this tournament seems to veer into questions about the whole merits of the tournament and its existence, even the woman's game itself. It just seems a different type of criticism to me.

A small example would be goalkeeping. If David De Gea gets beaten at the near post or a weak shot through his fingers (qv at least 10 times a season) then it's held up as example of how terrible DDG is. Whereas in the Woman's game it is held up an example of the how terrible goalkeeping is in general.

Ireland are 22nd in the world, Canada 7th. Bookies have Canada serious favourites.

Then again Nigeria are ranked 40th and drew with Canada so….

    we need something from this…

People generalise men's leagues all time time. Premier league is fast, championship is tough, series a is defensive.

In my opinion the keepers in women's soccer are a weak point. It's getting a lot better but a good keeper is rare in my opinion. Your example above about DDG is good, it would be commented on because it was rare. It probably wouldn't be as big in the women's game as it isn't as rare.

And the game is a lot slower women can't kick the ball as hard, they can't run as fast.

But that is only a problem if you compare it directly to the men's game. Personally I enjoy it. I attend a lot of psv women's games with my daughter. The progression in the last few years is great to see especially in the professional teams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,158 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

De Gea made up for all those mistakes by keeping 17 clean sheets in the Premier League 2022/2023. More than any other keeper. What does "qv" mean?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,728 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

Hmmm. qv should have been q.v. quod vide. Latin. I think it means something like 'for further information see'.

Lets not go down that tangent though. Game on.

Irish goal in the fourth minute.

    Yeah, slow play indeed.

Great ball in, though you should never be able to score from a corner, stroke of luck 🤣

    hammer balls at her

Great start. Much more attacking play than against Australia and it's working well.
