Am I insured to drive another car?

I've currently got a rented car, to which I transferred my comprehensive insurance from my old car until I bought a replacement car. I've now bought the replacement car, but Bank of Ireland Motor insurance is not open today to transfer my insurance policy to my new car. I would like to drop the rental car back today as there's no point in having two cars, but would I be insured if I cannot tell my insurance broker/company? Otherwise I'll just wait until Monday.

Can you not do it online? Most companies let you when you log into your online account. I have changed mine numerous times with different companies in the same situation you are in.

I wouldn't chance it, even if you have 'driving other cars' on your policy details it usually only extends to cars you don't own and as you own this new one then it's too risky without clarification.

I have on occasion emailed my broker/insurance company out of hours with a date and time that cover is to take effect on a new/different car and it has always sufficed. I get a reply email on Monday morning saying "Thank you we have updated your account".

Not all brokers have delegated authority to do that. I wouldn't chance it. There's never a problem until there's a big claim. Your policy document should say what you can and can't do regarding alterations
