Census - people from Meath not staying in Meath

It is really annoying me. I've heard a few times today "Census 2022 results shows that Cork has the highest proportion of residents (72%) born in the county while Meath has the lowest (32%)"

Making it out like people are leaving Meath. Cork people going on about how much they love Cork and how no one would want to leave.

Meath does not have a maternity hospital!! Meath people cannot be born in Meath.

I think the census question is place of residence of the mother at time of birth rather than the county the hospital is in.

I heard this discussed earlier and the CSO rep said it was likely the influx of people from outside Meath that skews the figures.

It's more a case of Meath being colonized, at a greater rate than other counties, by outsiders from far flung places like Dublin and Louth. Once this wave of immigrants settle and procreate, there'll be a critical mass of natural born Meathers to prop up the numbers in future censuses.

As others have said, it's more about people moving into Meath rather than Meath people moving out, due to Meath being one of the main commuter counties to Dublin.

I can't really remember, but did the census not ask what county you were born in? It was one of the first questions wasn't it?

Give the place where your mother lived at the time of your birth. If IRELAND (including Northern Ireland), write in the COUNTY. If elsewhere ABROAD, write in the COUNTRY
