Mulcher belt problems

Well lads, mulching with an 8ft McConnell mulcher in heavy rushes, going in A1 at 1kmh in 1000 eco box to allow less speed and the thing is eating belts like there's no tomorrow, even with red power belts I've had to resort to taking half swaths to not burn them out, 5 belts on the machine and they don't last pissing time is a costly racket.

Question is would a chain drive conversion be absolute madness, there's the 2 main pulleys and the spring tensioner pulley then aswell. Could you swap these out for the same size sprockets?

My main worry would be the spring tensioner allowing the chain to hop off and getting wrapped around something it shouldnt so would it have to be direct drive with just the driving and driven sprocket?

Would a slip clutch before the gearbox be an absolute must or would she do with just a shearbolt in the pto

(Spring tensioner is not gone as when it's fully tightened belts will only pull .5cm which is how she always was even when she was working perfect)

have you changed bearings or done other work to it? are the pulleys out of line?

Chain wont be any good for impact loads.
