The valve in the picture is turned off. (you probably know that) Dry it off and try to pinpoint exactly where its leaking. Teck 7 etc unlikely to work.

Yeah I turned it off going to work ,even a pot underneath would have overflowed ,the leak is coming from the top of the valve not the nut ,I could take it apart above the valve but I'm not sure if there's a shut off valve to the bathroom so does that mean shutting it off at the stop cock and emptying the tank?

On second thoughts it could be the nut ,I might drop it and refresh the tape

Replaced the valve ,still leaking, has to be this but impossible to get at with the tools I have

    Looks like it's off center

That's been cross threaded at some time. Might need replacing, but perhaps there's some compound that would seal it.

    Maybe time for a plumber.

Is the fibre washer still there between the plastic threads and the nut on the valve?

Sorry lads, your comment wasn't here before I posted ,ended up replacing the valve ,wasn't the valve ,turns out it was the cistern inlet float valve ,a bitch to get out ,got a lend of a crows foot spanner which eventually did the trick
