East Coast USA Drive

Ok folks. The big holiday of 2023 is on the horizon. Ive booked flights for myself and my wife to do a road trip on the east coast of the ol' US of A. We did California coast drive years back and loved it. So hopefully this lives up to that.

Flying into Orlando mid July, flying out of Washington. Car is booked. 1400km of road between airports. The theme parks arent an attraction, I think in Florida I just plan to see the Kennedy Space Centre and a beach or two. We plan to hit the big sights in Washington. I'm flexible on itinerary though. Anyone got suggestions for the route? Unmissable things in the Carolinas, Florida, Georgia, Virginia etc? Unsure whether to stay coastal or venture inland to take in the Blue Ridgeway Parkway. Its only 2 weeks. So need to be picky.

All recommendations/suggestions are welcome! As is any knowledge of what to avoid.

Have driven that route before and the two standout places for us along the way were savannah, ga and Charleston, sc. Both are definitely worth a visit for a few days each, savannah more so than Charleston.

If you’re into historical sights etc, you can’t miss Philadelphia which is just beyond DC. It will be super hot and humid with potential for rainstorms. Spring or Autumn I guess is not an option but would be more bearable.

I've spent time in Savannah, Charleston, Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head and have been to that region 3 times. The first time I went I drove from Orlando to Savannah. It wasn't a very interesting drive, but as someone else said Savannah is fantastic. You can actually walk around the city and there is a large amount of history. If you are in to military history at all pay a visit to the Mighty Eighth air force museum in Pooler, just outside Savannah. The USS Yorktown aircraft carrier is in Charleston and that is well worth a visit. The bridge that goes from Charleston to Mount Pleasant is amazing. You can park up in Mount Pleasant and walk over the bridge for amazing views. Magnolia Plantation was very interesting for some slavery history and they have a good walk around a swamp.

If I were you, once I got to Savannah I would get off I-95 and go up the coast on US-17. You see a lot of interesting marshes etc and some interesting little towns, plus I-95 is mental.
