Family member changed solicitor recently, paid €1000 deposit and had interview, also transferred property deed to new solicitor. Solicitor gave advise through email which was not really what the person was asking for but person said nothing as did not want to ask as thought tie information would come through. Then the solicitor said she was very busy working on tribunals and could do nothing for two weeks and would bring an asssistant on board. Two weeks later contacted solicitor and then was presented with hefty bill and more than original €1k, the solicitor gave her no advise a all apart from what was on the deed which she already knew was ok. I am not absolutely sure on this but i think there is a common area that the solicitor said would be on the property deed so she changed solicitor to get this and its not on the deed. She thought her previous solicitor just couldn't be bothered and is now in a spot, i have a few questions.

Can a solicitor take an initial what my friend thought was getting familiar with property as instruction?

Can a solicitor ask a person to take instructions from another solicitor a month after initial conversation?

She also instructed solicitor to send a letter to the person that is causing the problem which did not happen.

It turns out this person presented an invouce which i seen but the invoice date was before the person bought the property.

It turns out that her initial issue was not dealt wth at all.

Thankfully i have had little dealings with solicitors in recent times but this seems a bit shoddy to me but i am not sure what to say to her.

    Any advise please.

    Very hard to follow….

If the individual has a concern or difficulty with work carried out by a solicitor which they have engaged, they should raise this concern with the solicitor in the first instance.

If they are unhappy with any resolution offered by the solicitor, they may refer their complaint to the legal services regulatory authority (LSRA).

I agree with the hard to folloow bit but she all over the place on this one.

She only became aware of this a few days ago and i said i would ask here, I did a bit of checking myself and tried the (LSRA) you mention, she asked me would i call them which i am thinking of but its enough to look after our own affairs.

    Someone else may know more.

    Thanks.
