I'm convinced when you are a guest on the show there's a set of questions which includes a mandatory section asking about any recent deaths or illnesses in the family. Even if you were on after winning 10 gold medals for Ireland they would want death and disease tales for some sick in the head reason, I guess it's how it has been done in the Tubs era week on week and nobody is strong enough in the production team to question it.

If noticed this thing creeping into other quasi reality programs. The guests/contestants trying to lose weight/getting a new kitchen/planning a holiday or whatever have to have a backstory, preferably one involving loss , misery, illness etc. Great for lifting audience mood, you tune in for some light escapism, entertainment even, heaven forbid, but you're immediately sent on a guilt trip. 'There but for the grace of god, that's you'. If I want to feel miserable, I'd join the Green party or something, Extinction Rebellion maybe, Sinn Fein or even the DUP. Lots of unhappy people there.
