Need a cheap old banger, Cork City

I'm a poor (mature) student and I have to do field work around and about Cork city over the next 3-6 months or so, and my life would be made so much simpler if I had a car.

I've been asking friends, neighbours, etc, for the last few months if they know of anyone selling a really cheap old car, but you'd think I've been asking to buy a unicorn!

Is there anywhere in Cork that sells old cars that are effectively one step away from the scrapyard? I don't care what it is, but would be looking for something with maybe 6-ish months left on the NCT (and obviously not a death-trap!)

Any chance you know somebody who could add you to their insurance and drop them a few quid for the days you need to use their car?

Budget is kinda a "how long is a piece of string?" question - flexible around the 500 euro mark; little bit more for long NCT/tax, less for short NCT/tax. Much more than that and I'll have nothing left to pay for insurance!

I'm signed up and registered etc with GoCar, but I'll need the car from dawn to dusk for about 3 days a week over the summer, so it's not really feasible.

I think you will find it difficult to get anything with NCT for 500.

Left of field suggestion, would you consider a moped ?

There is a bird up around Shandon called Eileen, she is touching 55 but has a mouth like a hoover and is great with her fingers, she could do with a wash late evening as well. Get in early and bring cash.

Check out the car sales lot next to Kabana Lifestyle on the airport road. They have a few bangers in there selling for a few hundred euro.

not affiliated with them in anyway I just pass them going to work.

Alternative option is to rent a car from cork airport via carhire.ie

Take out your own excess insurance for about €50 a year via carhireexcess.com and then rent a car from airport for about €10 a day via carhire.ie

Never mind, rates are already at summer rates so bit higher than I thought.

The rest of the costs are lower though which might suit the OP.

Public transport and a bicycle might be their only option in the current market though 😀

You won't get any car with an NCT for €500, let alone a long one. Wanting it to be taxed as well is just laughable. You need to be realistic about this. With the money you have you'll be limited to very rough old hatchbacks with no NCT or tax. Look on DoneDeal and Facebook Marketplace for cars and set the maximum price to €700.
