    Hi there,

After a few years' hiatus, my sister wants to get back behind the wheel. The biggest hurdle is the fact that she is only licensed to drive an automatic. We've both been poring obsessively over the classifieds in the last 10 days - slim pickings. I can't get over how much a of a premium that automatics command compared with their manual counterparts.

    She likes this https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/2010-hyundai-i30-automatic-new-nct/34019858

We've also been looking at Aquas, hybrid Civics and Jazz's.

Her budget is circa 6k and she needs something post 2008 for insurance reasons (her NCB has elapsed). Driving is mainly within the confines of Dublin with the odd trip down the country. She has two kids.

Has anybody ran one of these Hyundais? Will it potentially do her a few years? Any other options?

    Thanks,

    Thomas

There are plenty of low mileage Japanese imports out there that fit well within your budget. I wouldn’t be buying a car with 150,000 miles over one of them.

Sound man. I hear what you're saying but the selection of autos is awful. I was recommending VW Up's (High Ups, 75hp as opposed to the 60hp) but she was having none of it. Says they are too small and tinny and that she wouldn't feel safe in one of them. Noted on the mileage, I just thought that that i30 looked fairly clean for age. And same owner since 2016 which I thought was a good sign. She (and me) are probably being impatient. She just wants a car for day trips, excursions and wants it yesterday. I like cars and have an interest but can't steer her in the right way. The 6K is a stretch for her and I don't want to see her go wrong

It does look like a nice clean car to be fair. I’ve no idea what the gearbox’s are like in them tho. Seems to be a part time trader selling it if that bothers you.

What about a Honda Insight? Thats probably the least tinny auto you can get in budget. I’m sure there are plenty of Audi’s/BMW’s etc to choose from but these should be avoided and probably wouldn’t suit anyway.

You could get a Toyota Prius in budget too. They are all very high mileage tho.

A little over budget but you surely might be able to haggle something off the asking price? It's 3 years younger, has lower mileage and the petrol engine is less complex than a diesel:

Just for a sense of finality, we picked up a 2011 Honda Insight in Lanesborough, Co. Longford on Monday evening. 200,000km, just passed NCT until January 2024. Originally a UK car but seems to have been very well looked after. My sister, for whom the car was for, loves it. She drove it back to Dublin. Higher spec model - heated seats, climate (a/c working perfectly) cruise control and rear parking sensors. Also an aux port for songs which her kids were insistent on. It also has an alarm/immobilizer and insurance quotes are looking good thus far.

Everything is working perfectly, lovely clean oil. No spare on these, merely a puncture repair kit. I drove behind her for much of the spin back - the car looks great. It's that sky blue colour and I reckon if she looks after it, it'll be worth the same in a year's time. Her budget was 6k so there's a few quid left over for tax (190 per year!) and some insurance. Happy out all round

Was listed at €5.5, got for €5.3. Annoyed that I didn't get another €100 off but there ya go.

    Thanks all,

    Tom

The insight is a great car - I own a 2014 myself and have gotten 80-90 mpg out of it on a long spin.

Couple of things on the 2011s and its more for future proofing. Oil change every 10k and only use genuine Honda oil filter and Honda Hybrid Oil - do not use 10w30 / 10w40 / 5w30 or 0w20 despite what anyone tells you.

The 2011s and 2012s suffered from the rings getting carboned up and the engine misfires - the only way to prevent it is use the correct oil. Motor factors will try sell you 0w20 - Trust me its not the right oil for the car. Use the Honda Hybrid oil and it will do another 200k without any problems.

Secondly gear box oil change - every 40k - dont skimp on it or let it go too far over 40k. Again use Honda CVT fluid - some places put in ordinary ATF but it burns out clutch plates

Thirdly you can buy a spare for them that comes with a bracket that brings the spare up over the battery - highly recommended.I have one in mine and you dont lose any boot space.
