Month Long Car Rental/Hire

    Hey,

I'm currently awaiting delivery of a new vehicle in mid-June.

However, I may have to private sale my own car well in advance while the interest is there.

Alas, I cannot be without a car. So does anyone have knowledge of month-long hires or rentals? Particularly in Clare/Limerick or even Galway?

I reckon I'll be needing something to tie me over from mid-May to mid-june.

Probably stating the obvious here but did you try the usual car rental company websites for prices? That will give you an idea but it will probably cost you a small fortune. Car rental here has gone very expensive since Covid and your now at the beginning of tourist rental season where demand increases even more which in turn pushes up prices further.

Have you tried asking the dealer you are buying the new car from? They might have someone on their forecourt that they could lend you or even rent to you for more reasonable rate than a car rental company.

Another option is to defer advertising your car until closer to collection time or even after you have your new car.

    Hi Bazz,

Yep, have had a look at the usual rental providers and as you've said, pricing is a little extreme. I'm looking for the alternatives you've mentioned, like dealers etc to see if anyone has any experience.

On delaying the sale, yes if it comes to that, I will do, but I'm keen while there is interest also to get a sale complete. Not that I expect the market to collapse but you know.

I'd say try your new car dealer first and then other local dealers after that. They might have something sitting on their forecourt not selling that they can make quick money from renting to you.

Is using gocar an option for you too?

Or can you just buy a cheap run around for a month's and then sell it again. Might lose you a few hundred but I'd imagine that's significantly less than renting!

You don't have to wait to mid June to sell, just postpone advertising for just another two to three weeks, by the time the sale is concluded it will be near mid June. If push comes to shove you can rent for one of the main car rental companies for the final week. You can always offer a prospective buyer say 3 months road tax or €500 off agreed price if he/she is willing to wait an extra week or two until your new vehicle is on the forecourt.

    Cheers Baz,

GoCar based on my rural location not ideal.

Will look at other options mentioned though.

The Gocar format is that every trip is a loop which starts and ends at the same place. So it's possibly an option for a shopping or school trip but pretty useless for most situations, especially if (like the OP) you don't live near a pickup point.

OP, it's often possible to rent what is called a 'replacement car', this is where a local dealer has a spare car which you transfer your insurance on to and it typically costs a lot less than a standard rental. Don't expect a spanking new car which has just had a valet, it's often the crappiest car on the lot, maybe an ex-demo that the receptionist gets to drive on weekends. Your best bet would be the dealer who sold you the new car.

    Exactly this on GoCar.

Not too sure Tesla will ever get to loaners but I'll find a solution in the meantime! 😅

Nice little cheap japanese car on donedeal will tie you over for that time, back up on donedeal then when your finished with it and get your money back.

What makes you think that there is particular interests in cars now more so than in a couple of months time?

If you have the space for two cars, the logical thing to do would be to advertise your car a few days before delivery of your new car. It would save you hundreds in rental fees.

Nothing other than a fear of not getting the sale I need when the time comes I guess.

Enterprise do cars by the month and have a separate department (Month or More Department) that manages them. They are normally a lot cheaper than entering the dates you require on the website. I think the last time I did it it was c. €1400 for the month for a Skoda Superb. To rent it straight from an Enterprise location, booking it through their website at the time was about €3,000. The only problem is that you cannot collect the car from an Airport location, which may not help you where you are based. I picked my car up in Swords
