Asbestos Roof Replacement

    Hi,

Does anyone have any experience with replacing an asbestos cement slate house roof? My main question is, can a general roofing company do the job once they are aware of and prepared for the risks and make sure to dispose of the waste correctly?

I know some kinds of asbestos have to be handled by a licenced removal company but on the HSA site there is information about 'Low Risk' work on non-friable asbestos materials such as asbestos cement materials where the same rules do not apply. I tried calling the HSA but they guy on the phone didnt know much and just read stuff off the website back to me. I also called a specialist asbestos removal company who told me that who is allowed to do the job was a 'grey area' and also quoted me several thousand euro just to remove and dispose of the waste and then I would have to get another roofer in to put a new one on.

I would rather get one company to do the whole job and there are roofers who will do the work without question but its very hard to get a clear answer from anyone about what is actually allowed or correct. I suspect a lot of asbestos cement roofs are regularly removed by normal roofers either knowingly or not but does anyone have any experience with this?

My understanding is that lots of roofing companies will have dealt with asbestos slates or materials previously and will be aware of the correct handling and disposal requirements for these materials. It is useful for you to be aware of the HSA information - shame the HSA call operator wasn't particularly helpful but often the case with someone who is possibly there to deal with general enquiries and will probably have guidelines to direct you back to online info.

When you contact your preferred roofing companies you can raise the issues with them and ensure you are getting satisfactory responses.

Useful as well to read client guidance for construction projects from HSA.
