Yes I done them 10 lessons almost 30 years ago but like riding a bike you never forget. I do not need driving lessons I just need to do the EDT. So where do I go next or how do I proceed? I have also done an IBT course but not finished yet. Believe it or not riding a motorbike is hard work and not nearly as easy as driving a car. I have a lot more respect for bikers now. I was just not ready to go out on the road in a bike yet and they said they would ring me when they have a spare place so I can finish it and hopefully get my cert for that.

Have you a learner's permit for a car?

If u do, Go to an approved/ registered driving instructor and get your 12 EDT lessons.

    Then apply for your test.

If you don't have a learner's permit for a car... Well then that's your first step.

Have you passed the theory test?

Knowing how to drive takes a bit more than ten lessons.

You need to know how to drive the car at low speed - which is why the test has the three point turn and the reverse around the corner. It should have the parallel parking as well, but does not. Learning how to change gears, steer forward and back, and basically know where the car is, and how to get it to where it is wanted to be, is basic skill.

You need to know how to maintain speed in traffic by not going too fast or too slow, and being able to stop when required by traffic. This includes position on the road, avoiding pedestrians, car doors opening ahead, and such, and positioning to turn right and left.

You need to be able to pay attention to everything on the road in front and behind, using mirrors, indicators, and observation etc. - so you do not have things coming out of nowhere.

All that takes about five years of driving practice to be fully competent at - you learn more every year - but 10 lessons is certainly not enough.

The test is just the first part.

You should have done your test 30 years ago when there wasn't a requirement for 12 lessons before applying for your test.you didn't, or you failed the test 30 years ago, so you need to comply with the current regulations

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,267 ✭✭✭mikeecho

    Blood from a stone..

Howc long have you held the learner permit for.. if you've been renewing it for the past 30 yrs, you just need to do the test.

Normally the instructor will give advice if you are ready to apply for the test. The wait times for a test may be crazy long do even if not yet ready it may make sense to apply as soon as you are eligible to do so as you may be waiting months.

I would not buy a car until you have passed test.

Once passed test, consider carefully before buying a car, try delay unless you really need one then pick one with low insurance as insurance typically costs as much if not more that typical annual depreciation of the car.

You should also be aware you are highly likely to be in an accident in the first year or two so pick a car with a few dents and nice and small to make parking easier.

You can't keep renewing your provisional license forever. They require proof that you have applied for a test on the 3rd renewal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,713 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

When did you get your learner's permit? Do the required currently required number of lessons and apply for your test.

You just apply and don’t show up. There are drivers out there on Learner Permits for 20+ years

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,797 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

Do they come on boards to ask how to start driving?

And that's still illegal if they aren't accompanied

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,267 ✭✭✭mikeecho

Exactly.. you can renew forever.. just keep applying for a test, and deferring it.

There are still people on the road who have been driving their entire life on provisionals and learner permits.

Back in the day, people would reapply for a provisional using their middle name, their name in Irish, middle name on Irish, maiden name, maiden name in Irish... All to avoid having to apply for a test .

Everyone needs lessons to prep for the test. I did my car test in 2000 and went back last year to do the C1. I've been driving almost daily since I did the car test and driving a 7.5m long motorhome regularly for many years. I did the C1 test in a 5 tonne GVW Sprinter which wasn't a world apart from the motorhome apart from the weights on the plates but there was plenty of little bits to work on and of course familiarising myself with the test route.

If you start with the attitude of

I do not need driving lessons I just need to do the EDT.

Then you are setting yourself up for failure. Book a lesson, the driving school will tell you very quickly where you are at, it's really that simple. Most driving schools are oversubscribed, they're not selling lessons for the sake of selling lessons.

I know but I just did not have the confidence back then. I had big plans but they never worked and I got lazy about it. Wish I had done it back then but I did normal Nd you can not change the past only the future.

Only recently. I had two provisionals but I let them go out years ago :(

There's no avoiding it, if you want a license you need to apply for a Learner's permit, do the EDT lessons, and then do the test.

It's the cost of doing business unfortunately. You might even enjoy it if you get a friendly driving instructor

Yes I could have worded it better.

I just meen I know pushing down the clutch engaging gear then getting a bitting point and coming off the clutch and pressing down on the accelerator as well as mirror signal maneuver. The basics.

I done ten lessons by an excellent instructor just never had the confidence as I said before or encouragement to go further.

Don't try to minimise what's involved but at the same time don't catastrophise. Most people are capable of preparing for and passing a driving test. There's no great secret, book a lesson, the instructor will set you straight very quickly as to what you need to pass. Listen to them, I'm sure some people here could steer you in the right direction if they actually saw you driving but it could be hit and miss. Any ADI will set you on the right track straight away.

Think of the EDT as another 12 lessons where the instructor will check how you perform against the EDT check list. You can't AFAIK book your test until the EDT is up to date on the RSA MyEDT Portal.

Jesus H ....You don't know how to drive in other words. You haven't the confidence or ability necessary to be allowed behind the wheel of a car on your own

    Sign up for lessons.

What more is there to say? You've been told multiple times.

Can’t believe so many experienced posters were taken in by this attention seeking crap.

If you can’t figure out how to get a licence at this stage of your life, the roads will be safer without you on them.

Lol. I am not seeking attention at all. I was seeking advice. Can a person not seek advice nowadays without getting the head ate of them ffs. I just genuinely wanted to know what step I should take next. Sure I can look in the ROTR book which I have with it talking about sponsors etc. I intend to be back on the roads in the next two weeks just not in a car yet that I will wait a year or so to get. In the meantime I will get and instructor do the 12 lessons and then get experience with an experienced driver beside me who will be happy to have my driving them around as they are not getting any younger abd the rest of the family are always busy.

  • You need to do 12 EDT lessons. And complete IBT training. 6 months after you have your learner permit issued you can apply for the driving test. It’s that straightforward.

It’s irrelevant that you did lessons 30 years prior. So you might as well stop talking about it.

Also how the hell did you do lessons without a licence? Your instructor clearly wasn’t that great.

I’m not wasting much time dealing with you because I think you’re a spoofer, but if someone genuine happens across this it’s there for them anyway. You my friend I suggest should just get yourself a bicycle. The fact you can’t even figure out how to become a full licence holder of your own accord frightens me.

Maybe to you bug night to me. Cars have not changed that much really yes more electronics and safety systems but the Pug 306 I drove then would probably be a better driver and far more reliable than many SUVs on the roads today. The basic mechanics are the same an engine, gears, brakes and a clutch all operated via feet controls, a steering wheel and 3 mirrors on most cars unless you go for an auto or electric car of course

Now you're on a wind-up or you really haven't the first notion about driving.

    I've reported this thread.

    It's on the rediculas.

    Get a permit

    Get lessons

    Apply/Do Test

    Pass & get full license
