NCT queries - lights & boot

Hi All

Just wondering if any / all of these 3 issues are NCT fails

1 Cracked front headlamp

2 Cracked sidelight (passenger side)

3 Boot won't stay up once opened - I imagine the two shunts / rods need to be replaced.

Car is 1999 Toyota Corolla. NCT is due next month. Normally get serviced just beforehand but garage have asked if I can source the parts myself. Not easy given age of car.

Cracked lights are definitely a fail. I got a fail for cracked front fog before but luckily it was only a visual retest.

Where you based? You’d be amazed the parts that your local breakers will have.

You’ll get boot struts in a motor factors. Easy DIY job to replace.

Headlight, yes, crack deflects the beam

Indicator lens, probably not. It hasn't a hole or a sharp edge.

Boot struts probably shouldn't but they're just a nuisance.

Based in Newbridge. Have tried All Spares in The Curragh for the headlamp, no joy. Need to check a few more.

I think headlight would pass if the glass is fully intact and no sharp edges. No water in the lamp itself or condensation that would alter the beam. Should pass.

Interesting outcome

I replaced the boot struts myself with parts from Mick's Garage.

My local garage sourced new headlamp for driver's side and passenger sidelight and fitted them as part of my annual service.

Just went for the NCT. Failed.

Reason: New headlamp is dipping to the right. NCT guy said it's a LHD headlamp. Asked me why did I replace it. I said the existing one was cracked. He asked "could you put a piece of paper into it?"

I said I was pretty sure I couldn't have.

He said it would have more than likely passed. :(

Back to the garage in the morning.

Bugger. The fog light I failed on before was bearly cracked. You definitely wouldn’t have gotten a piece of paper in it. It can be a roll of the dice sometimes in the centre.

Would someone be able to help me with my lights failing at the NCT.

Audi A6 , 2012, rear boot LED is failing but last year it was only an advisory and grand left off, this year they are saying its a major.

The lamp on the outside is working perfectly and this year failing it.

Wonder did things change

For an LED lamp, there has to be at least 50% of the led’s working so maybe more led’s have stopped working since the previous test.

Brought car to garage yesterday. They confirmed that it was left hand drive headlamp and blamed Toyota for sending an incorrectly packaged item.

Toyota say they've nothing else left.

Best garage can offer is to fit reflector stickers / masks to the headlamp later this week and it "should" pass the re-test (booked in for 7 June).

Not really a satisfactory or permanent solution even if it does pass. FFS,

That really sucks. Are there any Irish Toyota Forums or Facebook groups that you could join to find parts? There is usually someone with a garage full of parts for a specific model somewhere in the country.

I'll have to put the feelers out. I thought that it shouldn't be *that* difficult to get a 1997-2002 headlamp as they're popular cars and plenty of them were sold here. Just drawing blanks locally so may have to go further afield. There is a Toyota Owners Forum online so will register there. With only 112,000 miles on the clock, it would be a real pity to have to give it up.

I’d imagine most of them have been crushed by now. Try the UK or Japan if you don’t have any luck here

Plenty for sale on ebay. Might be better to source from UK to avoid same issue with LHD.

There’s no way I’d accept a LHD headlamp being fitted. Garage should rectify the issue.

Another lights issue for opinions please. My 4 corner indicators are working fine but I also have two small strip indicators on the wings over the front wheels. Just noticed one of them is out and it requires a new sealed unit rather than just a bulb. NCT is next Thursday so doubtful if I'd have a replacement in time. What's the likelihood of this being a fail issue considering the front and rear ones are working?

I would ask them for a refund and put back in your old light. You didnt get what you asked for, and they said they would provide.

It will fail if they catch it. Mine failed for similar this year.

The beam pattern is different as the LHD unit will light up the right side side of the road while the RHD one will be the opposite.

I wouldn't worry too much about buying from Lithuania, I've bought a few computer parts from sellers there and had no problems whatsoever. Delivery speed wasn't lightning fast but not to shabby. Big plus is no extra VAT like you'll have to pay from the UK and eBay UK you might get lumbered with their Global Shipping program.

Edit? But then I'd wonder why they'd have left hand drive headlamps in a right hand drive country?

Yeah, that's what's putting me off buying from Lithuania - there's a strong possibility that their headlamps will be the wrong ones given that they drive on the right. The listings don't seem to specify (unless I am missing something)

Almost definitely LHD parts. Do you have the part number for the old headlight? That will tell you if the Lithuanian ones are correct or not.

Visual fail. I had a fail for this two or three years ago, luckily mine was a side indicator bulb and there was a motor factors near the NCT centre where I got a new bulb, replaced the faulty one and dropped back for a quick look at it in the car park and passing.

Thanks for tip - gave Traynors a shout. Came back and said they had one but emailed 30 mins later to say they examined it and it was unfortunately damaged.
