Hi sold my car few days ago and not sure what I want next so looking to just get something for a run around for now as need something to get around, Until I decide what I want to get next .

Last car was a 2.0 TDI  so not looking for a 1liter or starter car. Looking at maybe a bmw / Audi around 2009 don't want it to affect my insurance or high tax.

    thanks for any recommendations

What are you looking for, big saloons like A6 or 5 series or smaller cars in the range? I did the cheap premium bmw for years in my 20s and it worked out for me, a few little niggly problems but nothing too serious, although they were cheap at 7 or 8 years old back then due to high motor tax, you'll pay as much for a 15 year old one now as I did for a 7 or 8 year old one back then.

I bought a 4 year old diesel A6 S Line in 2018 and kept it until last year and it was trouble free 100%. I'd love to still have it actually.

Between 2004 and 2014 I bought a 5 year old e36 for 11k, a 7 year old e46 for 10k, a 8 year old e46 for 8k, a 7 year old e39 for 11k, a 8 year old e39 for 6k and a 7 year old e60 for 6k. They were all petrol and the 5 series were all 6 cylinder 3.0 with high tax. All were also msport models. Mileage was low on most of them at time of purchase. They depreciated like you wouldnt believe back then. I'd guess your 2009 is in the ballpark of those prices which I wouldn't go near these days as there will certainly be additional costs. Motor tax will be lower but with fuel prices the way they are they will cost as much as mine did to fuel back then.

They all caused certain aged related problems and no way would I have kept any of them to age 15 as a daily runner.

But sometimes, if you want a bmw or audi nothing else will do. Get a nice spec and engine though, the likes of a 316d SE is absolutely no more special than most other 2009 saloons out there but a well specced 320d msport is decent. They will feel like very old cars now though even compared to a econobox from only a few years later.

Doing it on a tight budget and describing them as a runaround sounds like trouble to me. But you might get lucky if you or someone else you know can examine the car before purchase.

A cheap BMW or Audi can be the most expensive car you will ever own. Pay your money and take your chance.

If you are only buying a car as a stop gap then you should be thinking of total cost of ownership over the short time you keep it. Buy something that is known for being reliable, doesn't need much in the way of maintenance and is easy to sell on. At the end of the day it's only a stop gap so that should be higher priority than buying something flash.

Yeah have been looking at Honda accords but not set on them I have seen a few nice hyundai i40s

Do not buy an i40, absolute heaps of sh1t, I owned one for 2 years, there's probably still bits of it on the Limerick/Cork road.

Accords are nice, think they'd an issue with exhaust manifold cracking but unsure of what years it affected, Honda diesel can handle high mileage too.

Nothing is as expensive as a cheap BMW. I'd be making sure there is a receipt for that timing chain and I'd verify that it was actually done.

Depends on the engine as they changed around then. M47 is the older type and that's considered more reliable than the newer N47. That one in the advert appears a nice example and with decent mileage.

I've driven BMW, Mercedes or Audi for nearly 30 years, having gone through many variations of saloon model of each in that time. Although it's a long time since I've owned one more than 2 years old, I keep an interest in the older ones (especially if I was a former owner) and I deal with a specialist mechanic that knows Germans inside out. The consensus he and I agree on is that the most desirable of the three as an older car to keep is a six or eight cylinder BMW, but the most reliable and easiest/cheapest to fix tends to be any Audi.

If I were going for an older car, and wasn't worried about tax or fuel costs, I'd go for an early 2000's A8. A good balance of performance, luxury, and (reasonable) reliability, but I would treat it as disposable the first time a major issue popped up.

For a more practical choice I'd go for 2007-on E class, or take a chance on a 5 series. The problem with the Mercs as they get older is that they have that Eastern European minor drug dealer vibe, while BMW's tend to be patchy for reliability and expensive to fix. Any of the A4/A6 Audis are just boring once they get older.

You're right and an epic failure on my part! :(

You were right though on Diesel engine choices and the example in the ad seems a nice example !

Be careful with the 8th gen civic's, the sister got a 2010 which looked really tidy but it turned out that the rear axle beam was badly rotten and is apparently a very common problem. €180 for a new replacement and labour on top of that.

Brother has a 2015 and had a few issues last one rear window had to be replaced as demister stopped working.

In my experience yes, spoken to a couple of taxi drivers that have had them aswell and they had issues with them.

They're a grand car in the sense that they're good value for money and they look nice, but that's where it stops for me, never again
