Query re: BE Licence Application

    Hi all,

I'm trying to apply for a BE Licence (I already have a full licence for category B so I'm adding a category to my existing licence).

When I apply for a theory test online, I can only add a test for "BW (Car/Tractor & Work Vehicles)" or for "AM (Motorcycle / Moped)". I assume I book for BW and can specify that it's for a BE licence afterwards?

    Thanks,

    Fergal

You could always ask NDLS directly..... I would not go applying for a BW and then specifying a BE in comments or somewhere, you would be wasting your time and money in this case. Call NDLS and ask the question: Contact Us - National Driver Licence Service (ndls.ie)

Interestingly mine already says that I passed the theory test for BE

I might have applied for the BE category when I did the test... nearly 20 years ago. I wonder how much of the theory I remember 😅

So if I were to go for the BE category, do I just need to get a learner permit and then do the test? Is there a minimum number of lessons I'd need to take, like the 12 lessons for category B?

PS: sorry about the thread hijacking!

Did you sit a theory test when you were getting the car licence? If so, I don't think you need to sit the theory test again. I didn't when I was applying for the provisional BE licence.

    Thanks for all the responses.

I think my situation is most like what @timple23 said. I went into the NDLS centre here in Cork and they posted my learner permit for the BE licence out to me.

All I need now is to figure out how to reverse around a corner with a trailer 😬🤷🏻‍♂️.

I don’t believe that we’d need to do a minimum number of lessons for a BE test. I haven’t had lessons yet but someone I know has advised 3(ish) lessons and then the test.

The car/trailer combo has to meet certain regulations for it to be used for the test so it’s probably the handiest to hire it from a driving school.

The online system allowed me to order a BE learner permit without doing anything.

I dont know if this is because I did theory previous for rigid truck or because I passed my car test in early 2000s before there were theory tests but certainly no BE theory test needed.

If you sat a theory test to get a provisional/learner permit you don't need to do the test. I was getting a permit for CE & DE few years ago & on the form ticked the BE box aswell only to be told I couldn't have the BE because I never did a car theory test.

@hoodie6029 Yup defo will do thanks. There’s a crowd here in Cork that seem reasonable enough.
