For example, would many of Today FMs Transmitters be the same ones on air since March 97?

East Coast FM replaced their main transmitter on Bray Head (96.2) during Covid lockdown. Just did the swap one evening during their drivetime show, was down for 2 or 3 minutes.

In Cork 96FM replaced their transmitter at Hollyhill in recent years. Prior to that they were running the same tx since 1989 (which may actually date back to 1986 when pirate ERI used the same facilities). Century radio 89-91 had their medium wave 1143 kHz transmitter at the same location. This was also disposed of.

As other have pointed out a commercial FM broadcast transmitter can last decades. It is hard to tell. If a transmitter is working fine, why replace it. Coming up to 25-30 years old, then you might retire it or move it back duty. Then again you could get a unit/model which is troublesome and you wish to replace them after a just a couple of years service. The big cost is not the actual Tx, but the site, antenna, maintenance, electricity.

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

And the link system.... the digital micro links (TX/RX) are expensive items.

I heard a story about comreg requiring some transmitters to be replaced to stay compliant with CE, R&TTE and Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2016. Could have been links, not too sure on details on this.
