992 Learner Permit expired

Hi guys. I want to finally pick up a bike later this year which injury had prevented me doing sooner. I have a strange one and hoping for some advice.

    Heres the detail.

My Permit expired September 2018. However...

    A1 and A is code 992, but A2 is code 991.

I want to have the option to ride any bike or scooter, so assume its the A license I need to focus on, right?

So I would need to apply for my test and then have NDLS renew my permit, right?

Assuming I am correct on the above, what can I take my test on? Can I use a 125 scooter, or must it be a gear bike? I'm comfortable on both and the end game is to have something like a dragstar for summer cruising. It's been about 10 years since I had a bike, but looking forward to being back in the saddle. Thanks for any help offered.

    A couple of things:

1 - if your learner permit and IBT has expired, you have to start from ground zero again with IBT & Learner Permit

2 - If you aspire to using a geared bike, that's what you should do your IBT, lessons & test on -otherwise you have to do it all again.

3 - You don't mention your age, but I'm going to assume 20+ - in which case you don't necessarily need an A for now - if you do A2 now, including test, you can then progress to A without a further test, once you've held a full A2 licence for 2 years and then completed Mod 5 training. The likes of a Dragstar and many others are A2 eligible anyway, so I wouldn't sweat about doing A to start out.

Thanks for that, but am I not right in saying that if my learner permit expired but within the renewal period of 5 years, it can be renewed without the need to do the IBT course and meet that criteria?

I saw this on the RSA website and the Citizens Information site says :

All holders of their first learner permit issued from 4 April 2011 must undertake Essential Driver Training (EDT) with an RSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).

I got my first permit before April 2011. The last permit expired in September 2018. If I have my permit renewed before the 5 year expiry, I should be able to skip the lessons and the expense. I have plenty of riding experience over the years. I would be ready for a test after a couple of hours getting familiar with whatever bike I get.

I know i'm a bit of an unusual case, so I should have been clearer in my OP.

    Also i'm closer to 40 than 20 😁

    Hmmm...

Reading that it looks like if you're under 5 years, they'll renew it and you won't need to do resit your Theory Test. The only thing you can 'skip' by renewing, is your Theory Test.

The caveat being it can only have been your 1st or 2nd LP. If it's your 3rd or more LP, you'll have to show you either failed a test or are have already applied for one (and are awating a test date), and your next LP will be a 12-month one only.

Now, IBT: You still have to do IBT, once you have your LP in your hand you can book it the 'lessons'. In order to do any test you will have to have a current IBT and have held your LP for at least 6 months. No IBT = No test. IBT is only valid for 2 years.

My own young lad is right up against the clock atmo and RSA are telling him his LP & IBT expires in June and they won't renew if he hasn't done his test by then, and yet getting a test date has proven difficult. And if his IBT has expired by the test date then they won't let him take the test......
