Honda Civic ehev alternative

Hi all, in the market to buy a newish car. Budget is around 40k. Can stretch to 45k. Original plan was to buy the new civic but decided not to entertain honda and their ridiculous pricing. Can't buy EV as I live in county in an apartment. I have some charging facilities nearby but they are 65c kwh. Which is going to cost me a lot.

Looking for anything but SUV over 180hp. Is diesel still a thing? Steering heating, seat heating, lane assist, adaptive cruise control, sunroof etc would be nice to have at this price point. Current car 2017 Kia niro Power/Torque: 141hp, 147Nm feels sluggish and brake is awful in this car.

Not sure if it's worth the price premium over the regular 1.8 litre hybrid but other than that your pretty limited to anything without a plug of some sorts or a SUV. Unless your doing the miles or driving to justify it then I'd stay away from diesel.

World is gone mad these days when run of the mill cars like a Corolla cost 40k or Civic cost 50k.

Thanks for your input. Will give the corolla a test drive. I do around 15k to 20k km per year. Mainly 80 to 100 kmph roads.

I think the Corolla will do the job for you. It's also worth test driving the regular Corolla 1.8 litre hybrid for comparision, they are cheaper and more plentiful. I'd be concerned about resale value of the 2.0 litre over the 1.8 litre when it comes to selling on time. You might not get much more for the 2.0 litre over a 1.8 litre in a few years time.

You can sign up for cheaper rates but depending on a public charger is a hassle at best, you could be competing with some one nearby with the same idea, if you have your own dedicated parking space its possible but difficult to wire a charger to your spot, depends on management etc, a 3 pin plug could manage your daily needs if its not more than a 100 km . assuming 2 kw x 10 hours, = 20 kwh/100km,

Don't have dedicated parking space unfortunately. 70s built apartment block. We park on public road kerb or county councils public parking.

Btw if I buy a plug in hybrid, do i have to charge it all the time? Or I can charge it every now and then? Thinking of xc40 2021 models. Sorry for the silly question. Don't have much knowledge in this field.

If you don’t charge it it will just act like a regular hybrid such as a Prius etc

Charging it will mean you can drive on electric only power and not have to use the engine at all

I don't see the point if you don't charge a plug in hybrid frequently to be honest. Most plug in hybrids have a pure electric range of between 40km and 60km (less in this weather). If you don't charge it from the wall then the battery will get charged from the ice engine which means using more fuel. Your also carrying around a battery your not using which is the same as having another fully grown adult permanently in the car. Plug in hybrids work best when they are regularly charged from the wall otherwise your just relying on the ice engine.

Thanks makes sense. Gonna test drive a corolla hatch today. Test drove a corolla cross before. Wasn't happy with the cabin noise.

The battery is not filled from the engine, unless the car has a button to do that, it will work the same as a normal hybrid, meaning just a few % of the battery will be charged say less than 1 kw, engine will switch off in low speed etc, then turn on when that drops to 250 watts then on again back to 1 kw,

Some cars have a charge button to fill the battery, which is the most expensive way,

It was common in the UK to get a company plug in and never charge it, worked out cheaper for the employee. I have a 330e, 250 hp, charging the car at ecars is about the same as driving on petrol, I do get free parking which swings it for me plus it keeps my mpg up, something like 150 mpg, plug in cars suit lots of short trips and the ability to charge at home or in work for cheap.

Driving on a long trip with an empty battery returns 40 mpg.

Normal driving knock 20% of the stated range,

Update: test drove Corolla GR sport. Didn't like it as much as the new Civic. Tried 4 different dealership for the new civic. Only one gave me trade in price for my Niro and taking ages to proceed further. Clonskeagh is ghosting me at point. Not sure what's wrong with dealerships nowadays.

Honda haven't been interested in the Irish market for a long time. I wouldn't be surprised if they go the way of Mitsubishi, at least here in Ireland anyway. Cannot remember the last time I saw a newly registered Honda, must be about 2 or 3 years back. Even the Jazz is ridiculously priced here. Their dealer network is tiny too and I'd say they are only surviving because most have another more popular brand franchise to rely on.
