Where to store mortgage deeds

We recently paid off the mortgage and have received our Deeds from the bank. We would like to store these somewhere safely however I have checked with a number of local solicitors and none offer this facility.

What do people usually do with their original Deeds? Just store them in a safe at home perhaps?

A fireproof safe at home or if you’ve a few bits to keep and depending on where you are, a safety deposit box might be better.

Thanks all. @tphase unfortunately there was no option to do this, it seems a lot of financial institutions no longer want to do this.

I have contacted a number of local law firms however none offer this service.

It looks like a fireproof safe is the only option. I really would prefer to have the originals stored elsewhere though and just keep a copy in the safe.

Register your title, save all the bother of storing deeds!

If the safe/box you are using is movable leave it unlocked.

If burglars find a locked safe/box that they can move they will assume it contains cash or valuables and take it away to open later.

If the safe/box is open they won't bother with the deeds.

Mine are in a fireproof safe along with the passports and other important docs when they aren't in use.

If not registered definitely register as proves ownership. I was told despite having title registered that to keep deeds safe as the deeds also has certs like compliance with building regs and planning permission which land registry dont keep.

If you lose these certs it will be costly and timely when you go to sell as buyers solicitor will want them and you will have to get the property recertified.

Likewise until we needed to withdraw the deeds bundle from safekeeping for a short while. The bank would not accept them back for safekeeping on the basis that the service was withdrawn.
