Nugent Utility Trailer

Hi,

I have this trailer 10+ years but recently I've encountered a brake issue.

When I reverse the wheels seem to lock - I think its all of them so I'm ruling out a brake shoe issue with a particular wheel or something.

Is there something to adjust or is it likely something is broken? Also the brakes seem to be very sensitive at the moment and it's actually hard to avoid the trailer skidding when coming to a stop.

is there a gas damper in the drawbar, if there is it probably gone weak and needs new one.

Dunno if the nugent is like the ifor ...but that happened to me and that damper and emergency brake with lever moves under the drawbar and is protected from impact by a quadrant of metal

drawbar had hit the road, bent that protective quadrant/ piece such that the brake didn't automatically disengage and was stuck on

it sounds like the brake is stuck on at any rate and what wrangler said could very well be the cause sp look at the mechanism for engaging the brakes and see is it stuck engaged, then have a look at the cable/cabless and see if they got a yank at some stage

Just to update - yes it's the damper, got the coupling off and could push back on the damper by hand - need to get it out and order a new one.

Whilst you are at it check the wear indicator on the hitch itself. 10+ years might be showing a lot of wear depending on usage.

wasn't aware of a wear indicator - its a Bradley hitch where is the indicator? It doesn't get a lot of use, maybe once or twice a month.

I'm not sure where it is on a bradley. It's have knott hitches and they have the indicator on the right hand side of the hitch head.

I don't think Bradley hitches have a wear indicator, although it's been a while since I had one here.

Cheers for that - the wear indicator is fine on mine, as I say it doesn't get an awful lot of abuse.

Got the damper out and I can compress it (standing it upright on the floor and pushing down on it), requires a bit of force but nothing to excessive, it then returns to its original position - is it gone or not? I was expecting no resistance.

Sounds like it's gone anyway... Can you compress it all the way? If so, it's definitely gone.

Just be careful to get the correct replacement.

Yes, can compress it all the way. Luckily there was a code on it and I've found the same one online.
