    Hi all..

I am currently in the process of buying a used car from a garage and its tax has run out, what do I do in this situation and can I drive it in the meantime?

Would the garage tax it for me or is it up to me although I won't have it's log book or online pin number yet??

    Thanks all👍🏼

If you or the garage taxed the car now then the disc would be sent to the previous owner.

By law you cannot drive an untaxed car but realistically if your just waiting for the logbook to arrive then you’ll be fine driving it for a few days

You won't be able to tax the car until ownership transfers over to you and the new logbook is issues. This can take a few weeks. Technically you cannot drive the car with out motor tax but there is a certain level of flexibility from the gardai when having just purchased a car where you cannot tax it until registration transfers to the new owner. Get the garage to give you a sales invoice with their name printed on it as well as the date of sale. If you get stopped at a garda checkpoint then show them that and that should suffice.

However do not park the car in a public place or on street until it is taxed as you could still be issued with a ticket/fine for not having valid motor tax.

Got stopped yesterday as tax had run out 8 months ago. Guard said she could take the car off me but said she'd give me a fixed penalty fine with no points and told me to tax the car. Does anybody know if I can just pay the fine and flip the car to a new owner eg family member to avoid paying back tax ?

    TIA 👍

If you cannot afford to run your car, you should sell it.
