Is it legal to drive a RHD sidecar motorcycle in Ireland?

i sent a query about this to the RSA and they said they'd get back to me a week later as no one in the office had a clue

    This was two months ago.

Might be worth enquiring with an insurance broker... they'll know if they've insured any in the past...

We are RHD so why wouldn't they be legal.

If you are on about a combination from a country that drives on the right, LHD, our continental cousins regularly bring their combinations over here so they are legal.

If the RSA was to make a ruling I'd say they would probally look at another country that uses right hand side driving. Most likely england.

I was looking at building a sidecar outfit using a 1995 R100rt and a velorex sidecar with my Dad, but it would have been under NI plates which is why i was looking at the UK rulings, I did want to find out the irish ones but as with alot of things its kind of a grey area, they might just make a ruling if pushed enough.

Its a pain as the bike would have been used in Europe where the sidecar is on the correct side, but couldn't get insurance as the sidecar was on the wrong side for the UK.

Also most international rules for sidecars make an exception on foreign registered vehicles as they understand you can't just detach and move it to the other side. While the bike can have a fitting either side, most sidecars are designed with the wheel on one side and since its only temporarily in the country they get a pass.

Have you called overlanders in Gorey? they sell alot of Urals and probally could inform you better than most of us on here to the irish rules.

You can have a LHD car legally in this country, there is no difference between that and a combination from a country that drives on the right.

Insurance is a different matter. It's more expensive to insure a LHD car here and while quads are legal getting insurance is nearly impossible.

I can't see any issues with registering a combination from a country that drives on the right, getting it insured could be an issue.
