Even professional soldiers who are being trained and actively paid to shoot at the 'enemy' often shot over the heads of the other soldiers rather than kill them

To kill another human, they need to be dehumanised. (for most people)

It does become much easier to kill a human if you can dehumanise them by making the act of killing them pushing a button on a screen to make a dot disappear. So technology like killer drones or high altitude bombers allow individuals to kill lots of people, but if you had to actually do it face to face. Most people would not do it for any price.

Interesting question actually. There's a great line in the film Rob Roy, "I owe you money, nothing more". If I've a roof over my head and the family have full bellies I wouldn't debase myself in any way for money. However if the kids were hungry I'm left trying to figure out what level I would not stoop to.

It so rarely is, but it you had to compete directly for a specific resource that decided life or death, that's a very very different question to the one where you are asked to kill an innocent for money.
