Just trying to figure out how long before the flight to get to the airport.

Boarding time is 3pm.. flight is 3:45pm.

I have checked in, but have a bag to drop.

So should I get to the airport at 1pm, or 12pm?

Long haul is normally to another Continent.

Last few times I went through the airport security took 15 minutes. The bag drop is all self service, haven't spent more than 5 minutes on that...

Personally I wouldn't push myself to be there 3 hours before boarding. I'd check the DAA for times (https://www.dublinairport.com/at-the-airport/security) to make sure there isn't some abnormal event going on, and go there 1pmish if not. A different story entirely if you enjoy an airport coffee.

grand, so when they say "be there X hours before Y" that's based on the boarding time rather than the flight time?

Quite frankly it's all guidance. You will be allowed to check your bag in, go through security, board. Nobody minds if it's 3 hours or 30 minutes before your flight. You just want to be there when they ask people to get on board.

  • 4 hour is definitely short-haul. Even a 5 hour flight is considered short-haul, eg Cyprus.

Under 2 hours is sometimes classified as “commuter” by some airlines. Approx 5-7 hours I’ve heard referred to as Medium Haul, as with many transatlantic flights. Over that you are into Long Haul territory. But no hard & fast rules.

The only scheduled long haul flights from Dublin, are to North America and the Middle East, ranging from 6 hours (with a good tailwind) to 13 hours approx.

What's the reason they say to give one extra hour for long-haul?

To give you the opportunity to spend more in the Duty Free.

Generally bigger planes, which take longer to load.

    Possibly visas to be checked.

More bags to be checked in.

if youre flying to the USA or other random far away places you may need to checkin in person and get your boarding passes for onward legs from the desk or have other complications dealt with

Those planes are also normally larger so take a little longer to board, load luggage onto etc.

If you are simply flying to the canaries which is part of the EU and no connection, then its not long haul. Its a long time in a Ryanair seat , but its not long haul.

    As well:----

People getting lost in the airport/not hearing announcements

    Slow check in

    Security delays
