Inspired by this article where a media studies lecturer watched GroundHog day every day for a year , what would be your film?

For myself it would have to be short enough so ruling out the likes of Once Upon a Time in America, Gandhi , Casino etc

I’d probably go “Life of Brian” - maybe by the end of the year I’d know every single line by heart - well at least the funniest ones of which there are many

David Lynch's What Did Jack Do?

It's only 17 minutes long, and it has a talking monkey. It's on Netflix, I watch it about once a month, and enjoy it every time.

Chances are after watching the same movie for 365 days you're going to hate it - so I'd pick something I already don't like so it wouldn't ruin it for me. Something like Demolition Man.

I was going to say that but at over 2 hours I felt it was too long to watch every day- while I love the film I think I’d end up mad by the end of it

The longest day. I think that's the name of it. Sure I do not love it or hate it but at least if I ended up hating it I would not miss it because I was going to say Star Trek: "First Contact" but actually I could watch Star Trek: "Generations" every day for 365days and not hate it:)

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

The Terminator or Terminator 2. There was a time when I used to constantly watch T-2 almost on a daily basis. I recorded on a VHS tape and would often rewind the parts of the movie I loved.

    Robocop.

I don't know what it is, but that film is like some kind of visual security blanket for me. Always put it on when I can't decide what to watch.

In a sort of mystery science theater you are obligated to watch it whether you want to or not?

Bit of a cheat, will pick a musical Les Miserables maybe...

Or Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet, maybe I'll figure out all the words eventually :)

Or some French classic, with optional subtitles, work on the language.

"To follow knowledge like a sinking star..." (Tennyson's Ulysses)

Well to be fair, you would be biased given that your ma was in it.

    T2

    Aliens

    Hot Rod

    Top Gun

    Inception

    Point Break (1991)

    Shawshank

    Goodfellas

I'd happily watch any of them every day

Yeah! Well, your ma taught my ma everything she knew.. so there! (probably shouldn't be going down this road but how and ever😉)

A long film would suit best, if one had the time. Probably wouldn't get bored with it as much. I particularly like period films so something like gettysburg which is 4 hrs long ........

    Master of the Universe

Most definitely one of the meanest in that era of action films. Genuinely sadistic and insane, Kurtwood Smith plays him brilliantly.

You know he's not your usual bad guy towards the start of the film when he literally throws one of his own gang members out of the back of a van as a projectile.

    'Can you fly, Bobby?'

Terminator 2, Pulp Fiction, Shawshank and maybe Braveheart, Hollywood will never makes films again that are anywhere near as good as these 4 films.

    Master of the Universe

I watched Pulp Fiction last week, haven't watched it in about a decade but I did watch it all the time growing up in the 90s.

Between the amazing soundtrack and dialogue, I'd happily watch it through without any video at all, just sound.

I dunno if I could do 365 days of a single film, but there are some I've seen a ludicrous amount:

The Matrix - I may have watched that more than 100 times.

    Aliens.

    Die-Hard.

    Raiders of The Lost Ark.

    Fargo.

    The Usual Suspects.

    Airplane (1 &2).

    Jurassic Park.

    Master of the Universe

I think if you were legitimately to do this, you'd really have to give film length serious consideration.

So I suppose the real question is:

'what's the shortest, best film you could watch every day for a year?'

Robocop Theatrical cut is 98 minutes.

Stand by Me is 89 minutes.

That's 55 hours saved over the course of a year by watching Stand by Me instead or Robocop :pac:

Would it be worth it to save 2 days of watching time to watch River Phoenix and Will Wheaton poke a dead body every day instead of ED209 pulping a guy in a boardroom? (which I could watch on repeat forever?)

Blade Runner 2049 or Drive for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,028 ✭✭✭✭ButtersSuki

Off the top of my head and with literally no thought put into this:

    Betty Blue (Extended Director's Cut)

    Strange Days

    Ferris Bueller's Day Off

The Godfather & The Godfather Part II (together)

Manon Des Sources & Jean De Florette (together)

    Le Mepris

Les Miserables (2019 version, not the musical!)

    The Shining

    Dangerous Liasions

Prob. loads more French and Foreign films tbh.......

    Previously mentioned:

    Pulp Fiction

    Dumb and Dumber

Though it's one of the most impactful films I've seen on a first watch (and even repeats) I couldn't stomach IRREVERSIBLE everyday for a year.

Goodfellas is a class movie. When I lived in Spain it was on constantly on Canal +. I started out watching it with the soundtrack set to English and after a lot of watches switched it to Spanish and it did as much to help me learn Spanish as language lessons at the Ayuntamiento ever did 😉

I love it, perfectly paced and incredible scenes.

That said, if I had to pick a movie to watch every day for a year?

It'd be a coin toss between Heat and Saving Private Ryan.
