Travel & Subsistence - Public Service policy on own car use

Attached is a snippet from Public Service circular 11/82 regarding Travelling and Subsistence regulations (1982) with regards to use of own transport.

If your role requires you to travel around the country on a regular basis, is there really a basis for management to request you to take public transport over using your own car?

Anyone else in similar role can give feedback if they can use their own car and cliam full mileage or if you are required to use public transport?

You can use your car but only claim public transfer costs. This is standard in CS, Public Service and state bodies. It usually changes with grade progression

Thanks for reply. Do you know which grade this changes at by any chance?

Any idea what type of role would fall under 5 (1) 'an officer assigned to field duties who is required to use their vehicle'?

Ask your line manager, as it varies.

Yeah, it seems to vary alot.. hence why I posted. Some managers have no issue with using the car all the time with full mileage rate, others will only allow equivalent transport costs...
