Even getting a promotion from CO to EO within the same department you have to go through Probation for the new role again

I think the OP's question is more to do with if you were an EO and you moved to another EO role in a different department: would this require another probation?

Probation is normally required for new entrants or on promotion. Neither appears to qualify the hypothetical EO above for a second probation.

If you haven't completed the relevant probation, and are appointed in a new competition, then you have to start the probation again.

So, if you're on EO probation from promotion and get appointed to a different EO role before it's finished, then you have to redo it.

It should be noted that if you're in the establishment probation process (your first CS probation), you won't technically have a 'job to go back to' if you don't pass in the new role. (But I've never seen that happen.)
