Entries are now open for the Galway Congress, which will be held in the Menlo Park Hotel, Galway from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th March. Full information is on our tournament webpage, and you can enter direct from there. (There are also instructions about how to enter by post if you would prefer to do that.)

Things to note are that we have an enhanced first prize of €1000. Also players rated 2200 or over (ICU) can enter for free on or before 13 February, and there is an ultra-reduced entry fee for those rated 2000-2199 (ICU) who enter on or before 13 February. The standard reduced entry fee is available to all who enter on or before 27 February.

Finally, we apologize for opening entries rather later than we intended. The delay was caused because we discovered at the beginning of January that the hotel had double-booked the venue, and it has taken until now to obtain an assurance that they will honour their booking with us. All is now sorted out, and so we look forward to welcoming you all to Galway in the spring.

If anybody wants to follow this tournament, the pairings (and subsequent results) will be posted here. We currently have 160 entries - over 50% up on last year - though we may lose a few tomorrow depending on what the weather does over night.

    Hi Pete,

Will the final standings for all sections be posted - I couldn't find them on the website and also couldn't see them updated throughout the tournament - was difficult to discern when players where on level points.

Thanks and well done on another successful tournament.

The final standingscross-table and the full list of prize-winners in the Galway Chess Congress are available on our Congress page. The top section was won by FM Rory Quinn, on tie-break from FM Colm Daly, with IM Oleg Gubanov third. Section B was won by Emma Fougerat, Section C by Vivaan Verlekar, Section D by Robert Nielsen, and Section E by Alexander Zubrzycki, on tie-break from Rurai Goodfellow. There were also second and third prizes in each section, and many rating prizes. 160 people played, which is the highest number we have had for several years; of these, 33 were playing in their first tournament. So it seems that the enthusiasm for playing chess in the west of Ireland has not waned now that life is back to ‘normal’ after covid.
