Heat pump guarantee

Hi. A builder installed an air to water heat pump last May. The system appeared to be working at the time but wasn't used during the summer. Now the system works for about 10 minutes but then cuts out/ trips without giving an error message. I've contacted the heat pump supplier who advised me to register the appliance online and they provided me with a contact number. I've placed a booking for a work request but the standard rate for a service is €200. The unit was only installed 8 months ago. Do I have to pay this bill or is the supplier liable?

    Thanks in advance

I believe all electrical appliances are required to have a 1 year warranty covering parts and labour, so you should be covered under that. It may not include regular servicing and inspection, so this may be an extra cost. Sounds like this is the €200 they're referring to

It also might not cover external components, so if for example it's a dodgy circuit breaker then it's probably not covered by the heat pump manufacturer

In general a lot of manufacturers will offer extended warranty if you register the appliance, however there's usually a cut off date from when you purchase. They might waive this, but it's at their discretion

Have a read of this I would be inclined to think that any fault within the first 12 months is automatically covered under warranty and your consumer rights, and registering it would normally just extend your rights beyond 12 months. Personally I would push for a free fix of the problem and if they don't budge look at your rights legally and take it from there.

Maybe a call to the CCPC would clarify it for you so you know exactly where you stand legally.
