sinn fein expenses controversy

  • Registered Users Posts: 774 ✭✭✭ StrawbsM

“I do find it interesting that someone sat on that RHA invoice info to pull out of the drawer now though”

Having worked in accounts departments for small businesses, you send out your invoice at months end. If there’s a query with an invoice, you’d normally hear from them within the next 30 days as they’d be inputting invoice into their system. 30 days pass and you contact them and they say there dealing with your payment. 60 days, 90 days, same story. Then it hits the 120+ column and you’ll still send out statements but you realise you may be flogging a dead horse and contacting them is a waste of your time.

You don’t forget that a group like Sinn Fein hasn’t paid you though and it’s SFs fault that it’s now public.

Because the original Donohoe scandal and now this one are non-stories, SF can go to ground having stoked populist resentment but not be victims to it themselves. The only outrage here is one of breathtaking hypocrisy, and SF supporters can hardly be trusted to recognise that.

Where did you read about the Sindo publishing more details?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,475 ✭✭✭ timmyntc

they deserve all the scrutiny after dragging out the pascal crap to the same extent

however both of them are non-stories unless theres more to come - less than 10k in unregistered electoral expenses is not a huge scandal, even if it should still be punishable by a fine or something from SIPO for incorrect reporting.

Yeah it is very silly. Points scoring from all sides about minute stuff. However, we should be thankful we live in a country where the quality of living is fairly stable. The governance is stable.

The odd thing about these little questions about SF such as expenses etc. They are more damaging politically to SF than the more obvious bigger historical questions. And current questions involving an on going courtcase which cannot be discussed on boards because it is sub judice.

So the current government have finally copped on that to get at SF politically play them at their own game. Insinuate corruption, 'jobs for the boys', materialism, SF voting against housing in DCC etc.

That is how to beat SF politically because that is what the new generation of potential SF voters resonate with. Keep it to ordinary SF misdeeds and errors - not the usual ones beyond the ordinary that SF brush off time and again.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

They have been clever in making this a party thing rather than individual.

Does the buck really stop with MLMD?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,077 ✭✭✭ walterking

No, it never has and never will. The buck stops in Belfast where the inner circle is. They set the agenda each week and they dictate what to talk about and when to go off the radar (as they have suddenly done now).

Its a different rule for sinn fein. Theirs is an oversight, and anyone else's is a scandal.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,750 ✭✭✭ howiya

More invoices and expenses being declared. Fourth time updating their 2020 return now. As I said on the other thread the penalty should be something more than making an amended declaration

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,077 ✭✭✭ walterking

I see this as comedy gold.

sinn fein coming on again with another declaration of another error.

so sinn fein three time to the trough and not finished yet

they'll be drowning in it next week when the sunday indo throws a few more and the amount is substantially greater than the total amounts so far

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,542 ✭✭✭ mikethecop

It must be tough being a shinner ,

regardless of what kind o mud you try to sling on anyone else up to and including murder and child abuse they can always sling worse back at you and have it stick because its true

gas to the shinners try t down play their bigger financial scandal while crowing about other party's smaller one

    Truly Orwellian level double think

First time I've seen an apolitical person take the side of all politicians

  • Registered Users Posts: 119 ✭✭ cafflingwunts

Our petty thieves wear knock-off tracksuits, our dope dealers wear Balenciaga and our mass murderers wear suits and go the Daíl.

Neither side is right or wrong, they're all immoral participants in metaphorical game of chess, with us as their board pieces. There's no point in giving out about it at this stage, the country is way too far gone.

Wait until SIPO asks about all the volunteers from another jurisdiction, paid by a political party in another jurisdiction, who came in to work for Sinn Fein during the last election.

Sinn Fein maintain that they are two separate parties, North and South, for political expenses and electoral purposes. Therefore, when officials come South and lend a hand to Sinn Fein South, they are not a member of Sinn Fein South, but a member of Sinn Fein North. Therefore, they are giving assistance in kind and should be reported as part of the SIPO returns and a value put on their time. Exactly the same situation as a man giving a van.

There isn't a chance that Sinn Fein included this in their returns.

Doubt the outrage merchants will be on this thread to condemn them though.

Amend the register for 2016. Amend it 4 times for 2020 and then not proceeding with next week's vote of no confidence in PD only to change the subject to something else.

Then they reserve the right to bring up Pascal's expenses at another time in the Dail.

I've no love for PD but this is comedy gold with SF.

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,754 ✭✭✭✭ blanch152

They have made complete fools of themselves.

When you look at the first three or four pages of the Paschal thread and the posters who were foaming at the mouth, you have to wonder why they aren't over here calling for MLMD's head!!!! Comedy gold isn't the half of it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,332 ✭✭✭✭ Danzy

    I have to agree here.

It is always a stupid thing to make a song and dance over a small thing. As if no one ever used their work van etc.

If one gets that puritanical then everyone is a sinner.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,099 ✭✭✭ Abominable Dr. Phibes

The border is a funny old thing isn't it? SF don't even recognise the validity of the State, but are happy to use the border to funnel money from the US into the northern branch so it can be used to employ "volunteers" who can then give their time during an election campaign to put up posters, do the door-to-door shuffle, stand 101 metres away from polling stations etc.

It's very clever in fairness, and part of the DNA of the party. You cannot fault that. The overall strategy is on point.

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,754 ✭✭✭✭ blanch152

My point is that those "volunteers" fall into the same category as the man with the van in Paschal's situation when it comes to the regulations. Don't think anyone has picked up on this yet. SF didn't include anything on this in their electoral returns. No wonder they are running away from the debate.

Because they have so many keyboard warriors they can keep selective discussions going and also ensure other discussion die off.

Its very clever and they acknowledge that this is how they do it and they have an advantage of a young and very impressionable group of followers who will do exactly as asked without question.

Eoin O’B took a bit of a roasting on this topic on Morning Ireland earlier.

Also, what is happening to how he speaks? He was always posh and pompous sounding, but he has started rolling lots of his vowels and sounding like Michael D in Buckingham Palace.

  • Registered Users Posts: 291 ✭✭ Ham_Sandwich

total stitch up of Sinn Fein the people know it's the other crowd who are all crooks this wont affect anything Sinn Fein will win the next election and we'll be all sorted out if we look after them in the electioin

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,077 ✭✭✭ walterking

I know someone in there and they have some more juicy gossip to publish

FF & FG & Lab & The Green and every other party have to lodge the money from their fundraisers into the Irish bank accounts and show where it came from.

sinn fein put it into their northern Ireland account to avoid any scrutiny of where their donations come from and who makes those donations

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,661 ✭✭✭ Yurt2

Any monies in NI bank accounts are subject to UK SIPO equivalent laws and rules. You know this already.

Same for SDLP, same for DUP, same for Alliance, same for SF.

If you have a smoking gun by all means enlighten us, but you have zero evidence of any wrongdoing by the party on this front - You're merely trying to create the appearance of it for political purposes.

Is this also a "nothing burger" (as an aside - anyone using that phrase without taking the p!ss should be deported) or is it that only when FG get caught?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,661 ✭✭✭ Yurt2

It is what it is, if SF mangled or welched on paying for a room for stump event prior to an election, let them be raked over the coals for it in that context.

I've stated from the outset I'm foursquare behind parties adhering to standards in public office rules. No favour men, no sweetheart appointments, and no excuses when you're caught rapid.

The Fine Gael pom pom rapid response unit defence appears to be "everybody is at it, leave Paschal alone." Tone deaf and more than a little bit icky.

Try that in court if you're ever pulled up on a traffic offence.

Lot of anger around here today. Heard mindfulness is meant to be good for that.

Only have one account on this site, dude.

Just noticed a lot of anger and irritation about this complete nothing burger of a story regarding Paschal and now SF. Most of the anger seems to come from dudes who were full of piss and vinegar when Paschal was on the ropes, but are now trying to flip-flop once SF were caught being naughty naughty.

These men (it’s always men) need to chill out and stop being outraged all the time. Not good for the health
