I'm musing the last while about spending fairly significant coin (for me at least - 3,4,5k maybe) on a bike. In case there are any closet sales out there amongst ye?

What sort of spec / build are you hoping for? Ie. a 5k bike could be a lower spec newish bike or it could be a higher spec older bike.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,971 ✭✭✭fat bloke

Best I can get basically, but I wouldn't like to go older than 2019. If someone paid 7k+ for a bike 2 to 3 years ago then 4 to 5 would be a good price for it now I imagine. Are you selling something?

i was going to say for that money you could order a custom bike, but i just looked at donard cycles' latest pricelist and you might not scrape through even on that budget!

minimum STG£3,100 for a custom frame, and a 12 month wait...

I think if I'm ever in the top end market I'd be looking at buying a frame, components, wheels and building it up myself. I'd probably even stump up the money to have it resprayed in a nice individual colour.

There are too many bikes in that 4-5k area that are just average if I'm honest. You can get a good example if you look at the prices of the trek madone second hand, their prices nose dive quite quickly.

A shame that frame you had previously cracked. I can't recall the name but it was the wrong colour anyway. 😂

Curious as to what you'd call a superbike? Pinarello (I was never a fan but rode one a while back and they're as light as a feather) S-works (The corporate executives dream 😂 but still great frames) Colnago (how much is the name?) BMC (the humble work horse but some nice frames)

Any manufacturer's top end frameset is a superbike now imo.

Have something I'm considering selling but I'm pretty sure it's not what you're looking for, 5 years old, well used, rim brakes, mechanical gears etc... Have you looked around the Web for some new old stock? Like edelrad, merlin, sigma, Jonito etc some great deals to be found, even moreso if you get just a frameset which as already said would prob be best bang for your buck if you built it up yourself. Some nice cervelos on adverts.ie too.

Oh, suffice to say I'd be fairly confident that I know every old-stock bike there is to buy in Europe at this stage! There are some one-left, one-size, good deals around alright. And even some good bricks and mortar options here.

It has to be a savage bargain though to seal the deal for me. I already have two superbikes to be fair, but neither stand me any money anymore at this stage. One I acquired and built up very cheap and the other is years old but still minty mint.

Anyway, my bait thread doesn't seem to have enticed any shy sellers into the open :(

Based on what the various cycling websites are saying, the over stock in the bike manufacturers plus the recession coming this year will mean price drops and that will have a knock on effect, so I'd wait a while.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,971 ✭✭✭fat bloke

Yeah. I noticed Canyon put loads of bikes into their outlet over the weekend. Not massively reduced but there nonetheless where previously there was no stick at all.

On the other hand Colnago have just increased their frame prices ANOTHER 1000 euro. So 7500 now for a frame.

    Ba na nas

I was in the same position a few years back and got a good deal on a nearly new S-Works Roubaix. Beautiful bike. Latest and greatest Ultegra DI2. Would have retailed at 7-8k probably. I was delighted with it. Then I picked up a new Genesis carbon CX frame and built it up as a winter bike with my old DI2 and my beloved Campy carbon cranks. All for under a grand. And, you know, I just preferred it to the S-Works! So i moved on the S-Works and I've been delighted with the Genesis ever since. Just sayin' ....

Bike prices are coming back down - maybe not rrp but you are starting to see deals, sales and reductions again for the first time in a few years. I've even spotted a few bikes with the new 105 Di2 that are not as crazily expensive as it seemed they would be when that was first launched.

On the other hand I haven't seen a good frameset deal in a long time. In part I blame Brexit for that, but I also wonder if it is because components such as groupsets are a bit easier to find again

The new model Propel from Giant is mad money money at rrp - €4800 or so for mechanical Ultegra.

I’ve a bike to work next year & planning to get something but current prices are off putting.

Like Paul’s example above, a mate got a S-works Roubaix in the sales for around 6.5k 4 years ago. DA di2 disc. Same bike today is c. 13k.

You can understand that he wouldn’t be keen to sell that, even for 4-5k, given the extra cash he would need to spend to get a new one.

Until new bike prices come down - via rrp or sales/discounts - the second hand market will also be quiet I think.

The only exception I see to all of this seems to be high-end Trek Madones. For some reason that I don’t understand there always seems to be a good few Madones for sale on the used bike sites.

Edited to add: I just checked and the rrp on latest S-Works Roubaix DA is EUR 14.5k. Madness

I'm not much of a fan of Scott's to be honest but that's a fine machine for sure!

I actually have something sorted, currently being built up and should be ready next week!

Don't leave us hanging like that when talking about a superbike...

Some seriously good value on ebay for uk based bikes. if you can fly over and bring it back on the plane

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,971 ✭✭✭fat bloke

All in good time. But ah, rest assured, it's pretty super! 😁

Yeah I was looking at, start fitness I think it was, they had some fantastic value in 11 speed ultegra disk stuff that I was trying to figure out how I'd go about collecting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,971 ✭✭✭fat bloke

Yerra g'wan so. Is this super enough? I think so. 😎🥳

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,971 ✭✭✭fat bloke

I'm more focused on what I like about it tbh.

A super bike without internal cabling and aero handlebars😱

    Love the colour. Enjoy 👌

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,971 ✭✭✭fat bloke

It's just a file photo sure. Final spec to be determined, based on availability and staying within budget, but it'll be 12 speed ultegra di2 anyway and I've to choose bars and stuff yet. If I can get a set of one piece bars that integrate nicely on top of the fork and aren't just plonked on them great, otherwise there's a Colnago stem for it and a zipp wing- bar option that'll be nice. Delighted though to score a peak rim-brake aero frame that also accommodates up to 28's. I've been looking for one for a while.

Lush! There's a couple of new Ultegra 12s Di2 groups on Donedeal

Savage. Where did you find it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,971 ✭✭✭fat bloke

Hollingsworth Kilmacud. The wife is getting a fabulous new Bianchi Specialissima and they had this for me as a consolation prize 😁. They actually have another one, same size but in black. Red all the way for me though.

    😁 😁

Well this is me rim-braked up for the next few years anyway for sure. I'd already squirrelled away tubes, wheelsets and tyres, now I have a completed garage of bikes. So no need for anything hydraulic for me for a long time yet!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,667 ✭✭✭wersal gummage

    Very nice.

Is the seatpost adjustable or do you have to cut it to size and commit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,971 ✭✭✭fat bloke

I'm not sure tbh! I didn't think to look. I just kinda presumed looking at it that you loosened a bolt and up/down to your crotch's content!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 533 ✭✭✭Mr. Cats

Do rim brakes still work on road bikes?

Sure I'm still on ten speed mechanical! This di2 craic is a big departure for me! 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,373 ✭✭✭iwillhtfu

I don't think any of the colnagos have integrated seat posts.

That very same frameset tickled my fancy before Xmas …

I didn’t think I had the legs to make it worthwhile if I’m honest

it’s an absolute beaut in the flesh - far sweeter than the black that hung beside it 😉

    well ware !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,971 ✭✭✭fat bloke

Yeah the black is just too black. I've enough dark coloured bikes. Gotta go with the red!

Cheers anyway, though if legs had to do it justice then I too would be unworthy!!! 😁

I see a Specialized venge pro almost turned your eye 😂 That fella was legit btw the brother knows him apparently takes marketing photos for Specialized 🤷‍♂️

I see it's also gone sold.🤔 the brother has the exact same bike and the paint on it is class when the sun hits it.

That is a gorgeous Colnago well wear 😍

You weren't messing around when you said Superbike were you!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,971 ✭✭✭fat bloke

That Venge was right up my street alright if the timing had been different! Lovely bike. Appears to be sold now too.

Superbikes are ready for collection tomorrow I think!! Red Colnago for Valentine's week. Not bad how it worked out ☺️

    The Eagle has landed!

Quick little spin on it, in jeans and runners but, the geometry is quite different. Feels very "on it" and over the front wheel. Feels great. Roll on some sunny weather. ☺️

    Hope the hunts fit it!
