Air-to-water unit query

Hello all.

My LG air-to-water when heating the upstairs of my home causes ticking (pulsing) noises that seem to come from either the pipes or rads. The noises follow some sort of pattern, and they always occur when the upstairs rooms are heating. I do not see any leaks around the rads or on plasterboard (when looking from the first floor). When the unit is heating the first floor of the house, these noises are non-existent.

Any ideas what these ticking noises could be? I'm curious if others have experienced these noises, and the noises eventually disappeared?

We got a plumber out to look, but they were not concerned as they could not see any visible leaks. The noises can be a nuisance when sleeping upstairs in the master bedroom, especially at 3 in the morning!

Can you feel the pipes moving? Like a vibration?

Radiators? If they are hung without the plastic groove mounts being added to the suppoet brackets, you can get this as the rad expands and contracts.

The sound does seem like a vibration noise. Some pipe is exposed in the eve near the master bedroom, so I could run my hand over the pipe to check for such vibrations. I have a feeling that they are quiet stable.

Thanks for the reply. I cannot see such fittings on any of the rads (upstairs and downstairs). Noise is isolated to upstairs, close to the master bedroom where the air-to-water pipes travel from downstairs.

I would if the expansion and contraction could be related to the wooden battens or plasterboard that the pipes or rads come in contact with?

Where can I get these?

2 large radiators make this ticking noise as radiator is heating up. Presume it’s missing these.

There can be other reasons for that sort of noise. Try plumbing suppliers for them or if not then somewhere like ebay.

Thanks @Wearb . These small plastic fittings can be easily attached to the rad without having to unscrew a rad's bracket from the wall?

@MossyTracks we seem to be having the same issue. It sounds like dripping water or a tapping sound. The sound is so faint that it is hard to pin point exactly where it is coming from but loud enough to disrupt a nights sleep as you said!!

It sounds like the noise is coming from the pipe under the floor going to the rad and not the rad itself. I felt like I was going mad when I was explaining it to the plumber!

Some relief now that it sounds like a common(ish) problem. I will turn off all rads upstairs tonight to see if that helps.

Can be difficult enough to do if you're not handy at that sort of thing. You might also find that that wasn't the cause or fix.

Thanks for the reply. Good idea on turning off the rads. I'll be doing likewise, but maybe on room at a time, so I can pinpoint the issue. I agree that the pipes running under the floorboard might be a source of the issue.

Thanks for your honesty. Yeah, I would be handy at certain things, but I shy away from plumbing and electrics. Not sure why such fittings cannot be applied as standard 😥
