How does the tax saver ticket save me money?

I'm trying to figure out how the tax saver ticket saves me money.

The Annual Dart / Luas is €1150. I currently take the dart 5 days a week. It costs me €4 a day. If I used it every week (not including holidays) it would bring me up to €1040.

The website claims it will save me €500 a year, but I'm not sure how?

It's paid for from your pre-tax salary, so it reduces the amount of tax you pay. If you're earning more than 40k, then you would be saving up to 50% between tax, USC and PRSI (will depend on your circumstances for the exact amount).

€1,150 is the pre-tax price. If you pay tax at 20% you’ll pay €828.00 or at 40% you’d pay €598.00.

Also, don't forget public transport in Dublin at least was reduced a lot recently, so it used to be even better value.
