You can call them if you want a big phone bill but you should get a letter back eventually stating if the application has been approved and at what rate. iirc mine took over 6 months.

Wake me up when it's all over.

posted the letter June 19, received a letter today asking me to fill out the form again….actually to fill the form out correctly this time.

Think I tried this number before, tried it again today, same cut off after 11 minutes, impossible to talk to them.

It's always 11 minutes then cut off, does this happen to anyone else or maybe its my phone.

I Got through twice now with in 7 minutes a record and just my luck cut off after 11 minutes both times, so contacting my landline provider must be my phone.

Possibly there is something going on with your phone / line. Ive been on hold for nearly an hour also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,112 ✭✭✭beachhead

Isn't cut off normally,59 minutes if on a fixed contract?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,470 ✭✭✭SCOOP 64

Yes but 11 Minutes, been on to my phone company they are looking in to it, but promising I got 2 calls answer in 7 minutes on hold.

I got a letter back from them at the end of July saying they couldn’t process my application as they couldn’t read the date!

Pretty pee’d off as you can imagine.

Went online and filled in a new application on their website (I don’t recall this being an option previously).

New letter arrived last week, 11 years of class 2 already paid and the option to pay another 11.

Very different turnaround with the online form.

Can you post the link to the online form?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,470 ✭✭✭SCOOP 64

I got the same after request for more documents and the employment history which I sent only then they noticed that apparently I didn't date the form in the first place.

But I didn't do it on line I printed out the form and posted it, probably why it is taking for ever, think I'll be retired anyway by the time I get it sorted.

I can’t post the link, you access after you log in to HM Revenue site with your revenue id.

They lost my birth & marriage certs & then said there's no proof they received them, gone to complaints now.

    1. go to gov.uk
    2. search for "ni38"
    3. in the results you will see "Apply to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions when abroad (CF83)". Click that.
    4. read through the page outlining how to apply online until you see a big green button that says "Apply now >"

Thats it. You will be asked to register with your NIN etc. or login with your uk gov service ID at some point if you havent already done so.

Checked my contributions on the HMRC app this morning and they have allocated the four years I paid to my account, albeit they got one year wrong. If you are still waiting on payment to be allocated on your account I advise calling the international case officer.. I called about 5 weeks ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,567 ✭✭✭Peckham

I called on Friday to enquire about the payment I made in early April that still hadn't been allocated.

The person I spoke to could see that the payment had been received and the note about what years it should be allocated to, however she was unclear as to why it hadn't been done yet.

She raised a query to another team to fix it.

As the poster above says, it's worth following up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,470 ✭✭✭SCOOP 64

Finally got through apparently they did not receive my document with signed form as requested may 24, so now want me to fill out the whole form and send again, I asked them when did you receive my first application, answer February 23, this is how long it took them to notice I didn't sign one part of form after several correspondence asking for prove of address and wage slips etc .

Someone mentioned you can do it on line, any one have a link.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,112 ✭✭✭beachhead

Staff in the Pensions Centre UK are snowed under with correspondence from people who worked in the UK,including their own citizens who live all over the world. It all takes time to get to open the actual correspondence from people, verifying it and deciding how to respond. The UK pensions people are a hell of a lot better than their brethren in the Republic.

Online: there is a link on gov.uk and search for state pension.Don't think it will be any quicker

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,051 ✭✭✭Bogwoppit

I know a number of people now who’ve done it online and the response time is weeks instead of months.

I wonder if someone could advise on this please and apologies in advance for being a bit thick!!

I have been advised by HMRC that I can buy back years and pay for years going forward. I'm not sure if I need to buy all of them. Most are at the lower rate but I had some periods of unemployment when on maternity leave which coincides with the higher rates on my list so I'm presuming that's what it is.

Can someone advise how many years I actually need to buy back to get the full pension? The forecast states that if I contribute until retirement I will get £195 and I could increase this to the full £221 - does this mean that if I don't buy back any, but continue to buy from now on, I'd get £195?

I'm having trouble getting through to them so am chancing asking here in case it's really obvious what I should do!

Attaching letters that show exactly what they've said. I'm 50 and in full time employment here. Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 624 ✭✭✭RCSATELLITES

You need to have 35 years to get the full pension. You say you are 50 and let's presume to work until 65. That will be 15 from future payments so you still need 20 years as of now. From the letter they are giving you the option to purchase 17 years.

Can you confirm how many you have already in total? As in how many year did you work in the UK?

There is definitely no point in overpaying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10 garybaldy

Thank you. I lived in the UK for 7 years and worked all of that time but on their letter it says "our records show you have 11 qualifying years of NICS up to 5 April 2024"

I'm worried about overpaying as I'm sure they'll just take the money and say nothing!

I'm also wondering about the forecast when it says if I pay now up to retirement I could get £195 a week and I can increase this to £221 - that's not a huge difference - so do I need to buy back any at all or just pay from now on?

Quick question re: UK and Irish state pensions.

It's not possible to get both of them fully, is it? If you qualify for both, one will end up being reduced due to the fact that the other will be factored in when you're means tested at draw down time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,567 ✭✭✭Peckham

As things stand currently both are treated separately. You can claim full entitlement on both if you've made the necessary contributions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68 ✭✭Widows Son

Yes you can have two pensions

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68 ✭✭Widows Son

You could just pay the future contributions, but who's to say that they will all the lower rate going forward??? If I were in your situation I would pay the cheapest of the past years and pay going forward untill I had 35 years.. you know where you stand money wise paying what's on your statement, you don't know what will change going forward.

If I was you I would pay all the class 2 (cheap ones) off (before April 2025).

Why I say this is because no one can tell what will happen in the future, either to you or to the pensions. Who's to say you get let go and are not working or have an accident. Best to do something now if you can, rather than wait.

Then the other thing is, the pensions were already talking about getting rid of the cheap class 2 option. And in a few years with a change of government in the UK that may happen.

If you do send the payment, make sure you ring them and tell them what years the payment is for.

    Hope this helps. 👍

The contributory State Pension is not means-tested.

    Micheal O'Leary will get it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,178 ✭✭✭✭Geuze

Somebody could work five years in UK and 35 years here.

They could pay for voluntary NIC in the UK, and so build up the right to a full UK pension.

Meanwhile, the person works and pays PRSI here, and will get the full State Pension here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 624 ✭✭✭RCSATELLITES

Yes you can get both, this isn't a new thing. My parents are getting pensions from, Ireland, Italy, UK and Holland.

Also once you pay into pensions and have enough contributions you will not be means tested. So you could be getting a million from rental properties but still get the full pension, you will however be taxed accordingly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,112 ✭✭✭beachhead

Under the new pension scheme in the UK(for those retiring after 2016)the minimum qualifying years of contributions is 10 years. The HMRC may chose to add additional years(possibly one or two). After that you can buy credits up to the year of retirement, max 35 yrs contributions in total(stop at 35 yrs total)-all the discretion of HMRC

If you have made or are about to make a payment, it appears it is going to take 41 weeks to show on your record. I contacted HMRC on the chat app and this was the information I was given... Also it seems if you make a payment by bank transfer they have no idea what years to allocate it to, so you will have to contact em to let em know... And the phone lisne is just a 2 minute circle of recordings and hang up now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,567 ✭✭✭Peckham

I made a payment in early April. Rang them just before to tell them which years to allocate it too.

Still hasn't been allocated, but I rang them a few weeks ago and they were able to confirm that payment was received and showing on my account, just that the allocation hadn't happened yet.

They're very helpful and informative once you get speaking to them. But it takes a while on hold!

I wonder if anyone can help with this. I've paid the Class 3 NIC option a year and a half ago - and bought 10 years of contributions but my sister paid the Class 2 NIC option which was far cheaper to buy back. In the information I read it states that you need to have

    • the exact date that employment ended
    • the exact date I went abroad
    • the exact dates of all employments/self-employments in the last 8 years

now this is a long time ago - over 25 years since I was in the UK so I can't remember when my employment ended exactly but I worked up to 2 weeks before I came back to Ireland and worked within a month of coming to Ireland. Are they fussy about dates and will they check or will I put in a rough estimate of dates.

    thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68 ✭✭Widows Son

Give the information as best you can and tell them that you can't be precise... They will be able to match things up on the UK end and if you can send your PRSI record from this end they will probably be satisfied with that... That's what I did and all went well .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,051 ✭✭✭Bogwoppit

I can’t find the bank details for paying the contribution, can someone point me in the right direction?

I won’t be sending money to any Irish bank accounts in case someone in here tries to pull a fast one! Lol

Phone lines are operating as normal again now, about 20 mins wait. Got talking to the international case officer yesterday and he allocated all my payments and my account is showing a full forecast today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 116 ✭✭kennedmc

I notice on my letter that allows me to pay voluntary NICs, it says below. Assuming I am over the 10 years and staying under the 35 years, my UK sate pension would automatically increase (Once I made payment in correct way). So I don't follow why the Pension Service need to confirm this. Am I missing something? Thanks!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,567 ✭✭✭Peckham

    What number did you ring?

I made my payment at start of April. I rang them a month ago as it wasn't showing on my record and was told they had received it but she couldn't figure out why it hadn't yet been allocated. She said she was escalating it.

    It's still not showing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,211 ✭✭✭Charles Babbage

With the same paragraph in my letter I would like to know also what the use of ringing them is. Otherwise I will just send an old fashioned letter with all the relevant information and a sterling cheque.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68 ✭✭Widows Son

00441912037010. If you can get to talk to the international case officer, they can allocate it there and then. There's a menu you talk through to direct your call to the correct operator. Keep saying international payments.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,567 ✭✭✭Peckham

Thanks. Rang them this morning. Got through very quickly and person confirmed that my payment has been allocated to the correct years, but the online system can take a while to update.

She's sending me a letter to confirm everything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,217 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

I got two letters same date in July after previously clarifying my employment history. One says I can pay class 2, and one says a mixture of class 2/3. So I wrote back to them to clarify and hope it's class 2.

I think I'll pay the class 2 version soon. I haven't heard back from them. Maybe I'll give them a call to see what the status is.

I'm going to pay via bank of Ireland sterling electronic payment. So I presume what I pay here will be the correct sterling amount. I need to clarify with boi.

Then I call them to make sure they got the payment and I allocate the payment to each year over the phone.

    Does this make sense ?

I was told three days but it was done the following day... Feels good...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68 ✭✭Widows Son

This makes sense... Do you know the bank account details and your reference number?? If not ring them and it will be explained to you.
