Kindle kids is black and white so I'm not sure what the next option is - a cheap tablet? And if so, what are the best apps?

We're going to have a considerable commute for the next 6 months and am wondering would getting our 3 year old to read along with audio picture books be an activity that might distract him in the car. I'm not sure they even exist though and don't really know where to start looking if they do. Thanks.

The ‘get epic’ app is nice, it’s subscription but has some free books each day. Some are audio too.
