taxing a newly bought used car

i recently bought a 191 car. just today i received the registration certificate

when i go to motortax.ie and enter the information and the last 6 digits from the number on the certificate, it says it cant

when i click the link to retrieve the pin and enter the information and eircode, it comes up with:

PIN Retrieval Unsuccessful

We do not have an Eircode associated to this vehicle on the National Vehicle and Driver File. Please try again by entering your address details instead of ticking the Eircode option.

when i enter my address instead of eircode, it says:

PIN Retrieval Unsuccessful

This vehicle is not eligible for online taxing. Please contact your local motor tax office.

whats going on? am i too quick to tax it? should i wait a bit? or contact the dealership to sort it out?

Was the car previously registered as a taxi, tax exempt or commercial vehicle? At a guess I'd say it's registered as a commercial vehicle.

If you put the reg in to motortax.ie to check the rate based on the vehicle registration what comes up?

just talked to the dealer, he says the previous owner was tax exempt due to a disability

when i enter the car reg on the link you posted, this is what comes out:

not sure what "arrears (per month)" means...? i would pay the annual fee

Yes you might need to fill in that Form RF100A to reclassify the car as private, the dealer should know. Yes you can pay the annual fee, arrears would be if you were taxing it a month after it was in your name you would pay the arrears amount + what 3,6,9 or 12 month tax you wanted.

Yes I believe the owner has to make the declaration, had similar before changing a taxi to private.

He should have really told you pre-sale so you would know the steps to take, it's really amateur hour with some dealers once they take your cash. Similar with not telling people modern diesel cars need Adblue added.

so i dont know the exact scenario, but this was not a commercial/business vehicle. it was privately owned. but the dealer guy said its because the previous owner is disabled and for that was exempt from paying taxes.

Did you try changing the vehicles taxation class? Click into change vehicle status.

Don't worry about arrears, there won't be any after change of ownership.

i just did and the dates match the official sales date, it says it was transferred to an individual, and the most recent vehicle registration certificate was issued yesterday, and i received it today, so that looks good.
